32 foot Surf Class Lifeboat 'Thomas Kirk Wright'
« on: May 06, 2013, 05:41:42 pm »

Spent a very pleasant morning in Poole last week looking over the 32 foot Surf Class Lifeboat 'Thomas Kirk Wright' of 1938 - apart from 'Rosabella', under restoration in the Netherlands, I believe it's the only Surf Class Lifeboat preserved, no idea what happened to the other ones (Royal Silver Jubilee at Wells also went to the Netherlands but I believe is now unknown whereabouts).

A few photos I took are on Flickr here;

If anyone is interested in more, let me know and I can either post them on here or e-mail them

Hi all, here's some small copies of the photographs, PM me with your e-mail address for larger versions via e-mail

Boathouse, it launches down a short slipway into the harbour - owing a jetty not far from the slipway, when launched the engines would be in reverse to stop it quickly so it wouldn't hit the jetty

Engine and control shelter

Kapok lifejackets

Twin Weyburn engines powering water jets

Cuddy

They're not technically water jets, although one of the class was fitted with them - they're Hotchkiss Cone drives, basically internal paddle wheels.

Hotchkiss cone drives (covered on here elsewhere) water jets,(too many rivets or not,) Rob,
please let me congratulate you on a fine set of photographs, and thank you for showing them.
