Hiya chaps,

Didn't know whether to put this here or in the beginners forum so please accept my apologies if this is the wrong place .

I have been very very very stupid :embarrassed: . I have spent the last 6 weeks upgrading an Anteo Tug that I bought. She has had new engine mounts, totally upgraded electrics and a lovely sound system fitted.

Anyhoo I have just float tested her tonight and discovered she is leaking..... :o . After taking everything out so she is down to the bare hull and have discovered that the screws I used for the new engine mounts must have been a tad too long and have caused a hair split in the plank frame  {:-{ ..

I could really do with some advice as to how to repair this I am guessing It would be best to strip the hull down to the bare wood and fix it properly. So.

1- what's the best way to strip the hull, it is just loads of sanding.
2- once I am down to the bare wood what's the best repair method
3- I am guessing the whole thing needs covered in something  :}  so advice there would be much appreciated.

I bought this boat mainly as a learning tool prior to building my first kit so she sure is fulfilling her role.......

Thanks again guys for any advice you can give.

It really depends on the damage.
If you can shorten the screws that did the damage it would be a first step.
Rub down where the splits are, rub down at least 1 inch more than the splits.
Cut a "V" out of the split.
Paint in some aeromodellers skinning epoxy resin. It is very thin so soaks into the wood binding it.
Fill with wood filler and paint.

It's difficult to comment without seeing the problem area, but personally I would treat the split to some thin cyano (e.g. pink Zap) before resorting to more extreme measures. If that solves the leak then you will just need to lightly rub back the relevant area on the outside before treating it to a coat of paint/varnish.

Thanks so much guys, the damage is hardly noticeable from the outside, just hairline cracks. I will try a combination of both your methods chaps and let ya know how I get on.

Thank again

What they said.... plus I would drill a small hole at the each end of the cracks.  This stops them getting worse

If the mount flexes, vibrates and/or moves a little when the motor is running, they might not be merely "hairline" when the vessel's in use.

That said, I agree with Bob's suggestion: 'V' the crack, resin the trough - and be prepared to slap a layer of resin and tissue on the inside where the damage is.

Irrespective of what 'solution' you use you should remove the offending screws and replace them with shorter and thinner ones.
Leaving the existing screws will continue to 'stress' the wood leading to more problems as time goes on.

The holes may be a little loose for new screws, if so, you can fill the holes with a suitable filler.

The "super glue" and 'drill hole' options would be my choice, then a couple coats of paint to seal the area.

A very true statement!
Also something I find refreshing is that many of the members on here are not afraid to talk about their failures rather than just successes
