Washer pump bow thruster
« on: May 25, 2013, 02:58:24 pm »

I have at last put my eco hull narrow boat in the water butt test tank. Current version (she comes in sections) is about 34" long by 5" beam. In the fore section I have a Citroen Picasso washer pump, the sort that centrifuges water out of either outlet depending on the polarity of the connection - the inlet is set into the bottom of the hull. The pump is connected by silicone tube to 1/8" id copper tube, and pushes the bow round very impressively. These pumps are quite cheap on e-bay, and i've got it wired to the 12v battery via a 5A fuse and  2 microswitches. In fact it is good enough for me to think about building some superstructure for the hull and taking it to Largs or Ayr.

Did something very much the same with a barge i built,
but i used two water pumps from astras with the inlets and out lets on opposit sides of the hull,
so when the port side thruster is in action drawing water on the port side it is ejected on the starboard side,
and visa versa on the other pump. Worked good on a 5ft barge with 4 12v 7ah batterys as ballast.

I like to build my boats to play with, not to just look pretty, so they dont !
