Burner flame out
« on: May 26, 2013, 06:49:57 pm »

After tweaking my home made ceramic burner I set off for the pond with what I thought was a more efficient flame (nice red/yellow glow). All seemed well until I notice a change in the noise made by the burner. I brought the boat in and could immediately smell burning timber.
Once home I tried out the steam plant again all seemed well until the burner changed pitch. On inspection it looked like the burner had gone out but I could hear the flame, only thing was it was under the ceramic burner. Things quickly became very hot hence the burning timber. :embarrassed:
Sorted now with adjustment of the gas jet position and clearly a lesson learned. :-))

steam up......without knowing the vessel or boiler layout and if sufficient air space gap is not available, you could consider a layer of aluminium foil....then a layer of Kay-o-Wool followed by another layer of aluminium foil...I have read an article here on MBM where the Kay-o-Wool material was pre soaked in water to attain & preset the curvature of a boiler shell
The aluminium foil probably has minimal heat insulating qualities, however does offer protection from water, steam or condensation from soaking in to the Kay-o-Wool ........Derek

I have sailed the model with no problems a number of times now with no problem until I changed the position of the gas jet, with the result I have described.
I think all is well now just passing on as a matter of interest and a warning to others. :-))
