Ah - good! We were only there on the Saturday and, judging from the rain on the water, this was taken on the Sunday. Are these folk part of that family who have dominated Straight Running for years?

Hi all, The nomination competition for straight running is nominating the exact time from release to passing the target.
It can be very well adapted to an RC regatta.
If you have a course set out with buoys have a go at this:-  Start the stop watch at the beginning and go around the course and stop the watch at the end.  This is now the time you have to match.  Take the percentage difference between the two runs and this is your error time, lowest error wins.

If you hit or miss a 'gate' then you have to go back and circle that gate and continue on the course, that way you get an easy to apply time penalty.

FLJ, the SR picture was taken just after lunch on the Saturday. I expect you were having your siesta at the time.  ;)

I have questions.  Not wanting to insult anyone intentionally, I should say "sorry" to start with.

Evidence used for assumptions.
Name of picture contains 'Mayhem's name.
Stance and 'attitude' typified by said 'stance's (judges?).
The "Almost All Terrain Vehicle" parked behind person with cane.

Question #1

Which of the two is really Mayhem, the one in the blue 'T'-shirt, or the one in the red and white stripe 'T'-shirt?

Is the large blue stationary object next to the 'AATV' really Mayhem?

(I know the person taking the picture can't be Mayhem, the camera isn't shaking enough.)

I'm sure I watched a couple of folks (a chap and a chapess) with what looked suspiciously like a straight runner at the Mayhem Weekend at Wicksteed. The guy seemed to be trying to get the steam engine running reliably and had the boat repeatedly in and out of the water ; I don't recall them actually letting the thing go, though.
Whatever floats your boat, eh?

Roycy, you've certainly got a good memory  ;D
The old NAVIGA Christmas tree steering course used to be used as a 'nomination' event as well as a straight speed event.
You can, as you say, have it as a competition over any type of couse and with any boat.
Maybe an idea for the next MAYHEM weekend - a triangle course which you go round (like the old speed course) BUT you have to nominate a time.  I can just imagine Springer captains counting under their breaths as they tried to meet the time they (unwisely) set themselves  ;D ;D

I tried straight running with my Springer today at Brynback Park Summer meet.  I set the speed constant and aimed for a distant tree and did not touch the steering controls.
Amazing how the boat drifted off course over distance.  I suppose one would get to know the boats tendencies and habits.  Using this knowledge, one would aim 'off course' to compensate, rather like a Crown Green bowler does with their woods.
Mind you, driving a springer is rather like driving a brick.    ;D ;D ;D

Ken
Considering some of the straight runners are little more than motorised arrows, your results with the Springer are not surprising.
The 'wedge' class are usually 1 metre long and less than 150mm wide (so a Springer is a bit more of a challenge)  ;D ;D
I suppose that it was a popular form of competition before radio control became available (like tethered hydro) and, as people moved over to r/c, has now been left with the affectionados who didn't change.
As someone on here said - whatever floats your boat.....
