Static Model Fishing Boats
« on: July 20, 2007, 10:39:56 pm »

Hello all, I'm a complete newcomer both to this site and model boats in general.

I am however a very keen fisherman, and regularly go sea fishing on boats out of Pompey and travel over to Jersey once a year. Apart from the fishing, one of the most interesting aspects of this is watching the commercial fishing boats when sailing in and out of the harbour and also when out at sea.

Which got me thinking, that to have a static display model of a fishing boat would be quite cool.

What I would like to know,is can any of you guys reccomend any shops or websites which have a selection of model fishing boats that I could have a look at?

Basically I'm looking for a fishing / workboat model between 30 - 60cm long, that would make a nice display model for someone who's interested in fishing boats.

My budget is around £100 and I have previous experience with modelling cars and aircraft, but boats are a new venture for me.

Thanks, Matt  :)

Matt,

Have a look at the Mayhem Traders Directory. You will find many traders offering a wide range of models from which to choose. Most of them do internet sales. Although most boats are designed to be sailed few of them include motors or radio gear and so are fine for static display.

Sadly you will not find many model shops locally. However, depending where you live you should visit Westbourne Model Shop which probably has one of the best ranges available.

I have built several kits from Model Slipway and find their designs and instructions easy to follow, have a look at their site.

Good luck with your quest. Use the Mayhem site freely there are some excellent modelers on here who will willingly advise. Some are rough diamonds or "plain speakers" as they would have it, but don't take offence they mean well!

A WORD OF WARNING....it never stops at just one model and the desire to see your pride and joy ploughing the waves will creep up on you.

I think your budget is a little conservative, unless you want to scratch build from plans.

There are lots of plans for scratch building. If it is for a modern fhishing vessel these are mostly working models )they go on water), but all you do is leavbe out all the electrics etc, and you can enjoy spending more time on detailing the model.

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum,

Static kits are available of fishing boats, I have a Revell Plastic Kit of a north sea trawler at 37.3cm long to build at some point. £10.99 plus paints and glue.

If they are currently bothering to distribute them, there is the Lindberg Classic range of a "North Atlantic Trawler" and the "Tuna Clipper".
Billing do some in their junior range, and Model Slipway's small Drifter has distinct possibilities.
All are either intended for or capable of motorising, some are pretty complete, but for static display all are suitable for fine detailing to taste.
