Model of Surf Class Lifeboat Rosebella
« on: February 26, 2013, 01:18:04 am »

Hi now the Mersey 12-007 is finished on the outside and some of the inside is now done I have started my new build which is the 1935 Surf class Lifeboat Rosabella. My friend Richard has cut the frames out and put a layer of planks on so I have a starting platform. So I am now cutting out and fixing planks to get the diagonal effect. Will only post the odd picture  due to taken up space on the forum. I don't want to get into using a picture hosting site.

Hi John,
That's quite an unusual Lifeboat. I'm looking forward to seeing the build progress. I did stumble across some photos of her undergoing restoration in the Netherlands, here: http://media.dorusrijkers.nl/album162
Might be useful.

She's a pretty little boat, I'll give you that. The model's looking very good. If you look at the photos Charlie posted (it's definitely her, the yard number on the stem's a match although the lines look a little bit odd) the last one shows an odd cut out section at the bottom of the stern post. It doesn't look original, so anyone know what it's for?

I have done this as of the pictures I have got of the real boat if you look at the pictures on http://media.dorusrijkers.nl/album162 you will see what I mean. If there are any comments than please say in a nice way as there are to many argument's on here. Will post pictures as I go along.

Hi have done some more planking its a slow job both sides are to the same position. Can only glue about 5 at a time as its a work of art to try and hold them while the glue sets.

Hi have done a bit more work on the Rosabella  have now finished all the planking inside and out and have made and fitted the propshaft and the supports. Have shaped and marked out the deck on a piece of 2mm ply and glued on the rails [ie the hull frames] that go between the planking as per plan and then cut the planks out of Yellow Pine and glued them in between the rails and sanded them down there was a lot of planks I think over 200 in total. Now started to cut out  the 18 scuttle holes. I hope to get them all working if possible.

As I know John quite well, and can tell you he is a very modest chap,I  would just like to say, that like Neil,99.9% of his models, are made by himself. If you could see his Mersey, and indeed this one,in real life you would really be amazed.

Hi all managed to get a fair bit done lately have made up the 2 end boxes the tops of these were done double diagonal like the hull and the ends were Oak cut into planks and fitted on ply. Put on the rubbing strip I used a bit of round oak cut it down and put it in the tube of my wall paper steamer and steamed it for a while and it bent a treat. Also put the top handrails on the front and rear end boxes and made up and fitted the spray deflector. The 2 rear towing bollards were cut out of Oak and fitted. On the inside I have fitted strips of wood to show were the frames would have been and marked out the openings for the scuttle. I drilled the hull and filed out the 18 scuttle holes and made up 18 scuttle plates these all open and shut as I forgot to take pictures of the making of these I will draw the process out and put it on later.
