Running 6v motor on 12V
« on: June 21, 2013, 09:58:16 am »

Firstly, apologies if this question has been answered previously but if it has I can't find the answer I need.

I am currently rebuilding my TID tug and am replacing the 6v electrics with 12v due to the requirement of smoke generator and other auxilliaries. Unfortunately due to the internal layout of the running gear (which I really do not want to start messing with) there is no room for separate batteries. The boat is driven by a Robbe geared motor which is rated at 6-9.6v and which drives the boat well through a near-scale prop when running at its current 6v.

I understand that modern ESCs deliver pulsed outputs to control speed, implying that the full voltage is delivered at each pulse. Many ESCs can be adjusted to limit maximum motor speed but I assume this does not lower the voltage delivered at each pulse. What would be the effect of using such an ESC to control a lower rated motor? Is it just the average voltage over time which is relevant or would the fact that 12v pulses are being delivered be detrimental to the motor?

Any advice greatfully received. Thanks.

You might consider using an ACTion P93 Multicontroller as your ESC. In one of its modes (Mode 2) it delivers an output equivalent to 50% of the input voltage i.e. you can fit your 12v battery and safely run the 6v motor from it. A 12v battery is not going to help your motor's brushes or bearings if run direct. The only limitation is that P93 doesn't have BEC so you will need either a separate pack for the receiver or something like a P92 Distribution Board which will supply 12v to all your auxiliary functions and 5v for the receiver. Details of both are here http://http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/mixers.php  and here http://http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pat.php

Hi nsa66, First you do not have to select full speed.
I run a 9 volt motor on 12 volts, like yourself there is a reduction gearbox and it works fine.
What you might also consider is reducing the size of the propeller either by fitting a new one with less pitch or one with a smaller diameter.
I think you will be OK, but test first.
good luck,
Roy

Don't blame me, Mike. It's the ruddy template thing on this forum that's the problem. There's not a Windows command for "Copy and Paste most of the URL", unless it's got a shortcut like "Press Ctrl and half of the W".
Anyway, what's an extra http:// between friends (even senile ones)?

It's this 'retirement' gig that's doing my head in......................... %%

I knew, I knew, I knew, you could not keep a good man down. I am surprised you have heard of our water plight, it is very bad , 75,000 people evacuated & that is just our city, Calgary, there are several towns down river even worse off, it is an awful mess. It will take months to clean up that is if we get no more rain, fingers crossed, Mick B. PS =It is nice to see someone over there that knows what is going on over here. Thanks Dave.

I do have some idea of what the people of Calgary are going through, as I have had bitter experience of several big floods in Lismore, NSW. The major floods I went through were in 1954 and 1974, but there were many minor ones as well. The big difference, as far as I can tell from the TV news reports, was that we didn't suffer from fast running water. Our family owned a butcher shop in the Lismore CBD, and in each of the big floods there was over 2 metres of water in it for a couple of days. The 1954 flood came so quickly that we were unable to move the meat from the cool rooms, and the resultant smell was indescribable. We had a bit more notice in '74, and were able to clear the rooms out.

My sympathy goes to the affected people of Calgary and district.
