Z-POXY PT40 FINISHING RESIN
« on: February 26, 2014, 11:32:08 am »

Hi All,

I am planning to use Z-POXY PT40 FINISHING RESIN to sheath and waterproof a planked hull (832mm long). I've got a 12oz pack and I'm wondering about coverage and whether or not it'll be enough???? .......... according to the "destructions" you paint the stuff on, lay the tissue on and sort of smooth it out and let it soak in......... Now, not knowing much about it, I would have thought at least a cost over the top would be needed ???? ........ But, what do I know  {:-{

Comments and suggestions please.

I have used similar stuff on the bottom of an Aerokits Crash Tender. The advice then was to use an old credit card or similar bit of plastic to squeegee ( spread is easier to spell! ) the laminating resin through the tissue. This saves a second coat going on, keeping the weight down. less of an issue on an boat than an aircraft, but still good practice.

Thanks.......... So, do you think the 12oz pack will be enough ????

Its many moons since I used it on the crash tender, but I would think more than enough. Its spread thin in use, and a typical aircraft wing, where it would usually be used, is going to have a bigger surface area than your boat hull.

Hi Peter - 12oz should be more than enough it certainly covered my boat which is about 1m long.  I followed these instructions and it came out really well.  I used a 2" roller as suggested and didn't have any issues.  I diluted the epoxy with isopropyl alcohol (Just a little) and this allowed it to flow a lot better and cured with no problems.  Heating the resin will also allow it to flow better :)  Use 25g material it works fine

Thanks fellas ............. Much appreciated. Those instructions look good .......... seems like it's easy enough, that even I can mess it up  {:-{

Mark, when you say you thinned out the resin with a little IPA .......... Is that just for the sealing coat or for the whole job ???? .......... and " just a lttle ??? ......... Are we looking at a few drops from a pipette for 60ml ????

I thinned out all of the coats (3 of them in total) and used about 3 - 5% IPA.  You will see if you add a bit it thins it down very quickly.  Just make sure that you really stir it in well if you do try it

Hi,

I've recently used this for the first time to sheath my racing sparrow. I used 25 g cloth and found that with a brush and credit card, I only needed to warm the two parts in warm water before mixing. Plenty thin enough and a doddle to apply. My first time sheathing a hull.
Just remembered, I've done two layers of glass and one finish coat and still have 2/3rds of my resin left. I'm building a 750 mm racing sparrow.

Good luck

Ben
