What type of railing do you want because he makes the round split-pin type or the flat photo-etched type?

Sorry Ted, not used the etched ones but the round ones are strong enough provided a modicum of care is applied O0 . Basically they're half round brass wire and the tail fits into a hole in the deck edge so they're well held. Sometimes a b****r to paint but aren't all railings?

As far as price is concerned, the round ones are 15p each and the flat ones are 11p each and the wire is £1.30 for a 20ft coil. There's a £3.00 carriage charge (1st class). These figures are from the start of the year.

To be honest, it's well worth getting a copy of the catalogue for the ladders, stairs and odds'n s*ds.

If you'd like, send me a pm with your address and I'll put some spares of the round ones in the post.

Are you sure that they're his stanchions? The reason I ask is that none of the ones I have had from him have had the top extension. {:-{

I told Mr Lane what was required, and he made them as wanted. The only thing I did was make small rings to control the hight and hold the split together, so I could paint off the model.

hi tony....james lane made me some  two ball stanchions with unequal gapping with top extensions 20 years ago when I built a trawler with a veranda capping........if you draw the stanchions to scale of what you want and size you want, he'll make virtually anything.

So yours are specials then Hammer, with the raised bit above the top rail, while those that Larry has on the HDML are the standard type?
I had some specials as well, where the stanchions continued up to support deck awnings, but I'd assumed that the standard finish was with a 'ball' at the head?
Mr Lane is certainly very helpful and I've had no problem with them once I'd got into the flow. :-))

I have used photo etched stanchions at 1/96 in a number of models and have found them to quite tough. I even dropped an item on the deck edge and flattened the railings to the deck but was able to straighten them all out without any problems.

If you go for the individual photo-etched stanchions, which look much better, then the way to fit them is to do so off the model. Push them into a soft sheet of balsa at the spacing required then thread brass wire through. Straighten all up until you are happy and then spray paint. Once dry they can be removed in long lengths and superglued to the model. Some touching up of the paint is usually needed but the panit holds all together and as above once fitted to the model are both tough enough for sailing and of very light appearance.

Cheers
