Sailing in Brackish waters...
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:12:33 am »

My brother is at the "nearly finished" stage of building a Flower Corvette. The Revel plastic kit, not the new version. He has just finished painting the boat and is about to put Transfers on, etc. He has used Halfords spray paints fo the model and has a can of their Matt Clear Varnish to put onlast, He sails at a water that has slightly brachish water, he is wondering, will this affect the finish, does he even need the varnish? Your advice would be appreciated, He knows about rinseing off the model in clear water after a sailing session.

If he is putting waterslide transfers on, it doesn't matter what kind of water he is sailing in - it needs the varnish if he wants them to stay fixed.  An extra layer of protection in water that carries some silt, which is probably any outdoor water in a fairly natural environment, never does any harm.

I agree with Malcolm, he will definitely need to clear coat the boat hull regardless of what sort of water he sails in, otherwise any transfers / decals will be affected. I sail in salt water all the time, and as long as the boat is washed after each sailing session there is absolutely no problem.

I must admit the duck poo makes a lovely weathering effect..just let it go hard and then gently rub off ..worked wonders on my subs!

...and that's a definite Yes from me - use the spray varnish.
I used to use the brush on "cheapy" stuff and it tends to go a dirty yellow after sun exposure. I think this is due to the varnish not having any UV protection ?
