Plastic Model Clear Coat?
« on: August 06, 2013, 04:47:21 pm »

Hi! I am wonder if anyone uses any sort of clear coat over their enamel paints. I myself have found that the "flat" enamels are prone to scratches and come off easily. Is there anything I can spray over it? I would prefer a flat or satin finish.
Thanks

A plastic primer before colours will give better adhesion
If the colour has nothing to bond to then another coat on top
is only adhering to the colour.

Ronseal Polyurethane varnish will do the job. Make sure it is the polyurethane type and not the water based acrylic variety. You can buy MattCoat or SatinCoat. It can be difficult to find in small tins these days but alternatives can be found in Wilkinsons or from Rustins: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rustins-Polyurethane-Varnish-Clear-RUSPVMCL250/dp/B001GU4BPI

You need the interior variety which doesn't contain the UV filters found in the exterior varnish as these add a yellowish tint which is noticeable over light colours.

You could try the new Humbrol Clear.

It says on the bottle that its a gloss varnish however it's a very thin sealant used by plastic aircraft and AFV modellers to seal their paint finishes in preparation for applying the decals. The benefit of this liquid is that the more you apply the glossier the finish so you can control how matt or glossy you want your model to be. It seals in the first coat and can be applied either by airbrush or by paint brush. It's apparently based upon the Johnson's Future Floor Polish liquid which was once available in abundance but the recipe changed two years ago which upset its qualities for the plastic modeller. I use it all the time on my AFV and aircraft models, it also prevents clear injection moulded plastics from fogging when using superglue or normal poly cement.

if you want a matt or satin finish apply clear , then use the humbrol matt cote or satin cote after it ..apparently this stuff doesn't go yellow like standard varnishes either
