Model Slipway 16th scale Tamar.
« on: June 06, 2013, 09:24:55 pm »

Hi Guys,
I have just finished building my second kit model and would now like to install a sound system (Action Electronics P100).

I would appreciate any advice you could give for this model.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a 16th scale mast flag?

I have attached a few pictures of my build for any comments.

I launched it last Sunday at my Club sailing venue and it seemed to go very well.

Regards,

Ian

Hi Ian,

You're Tamar looks very good.  I'm building one as well.  Don't know about the P100 but I got my flags from Westbourne Models who advised me on the right sizes  - and their BECC flags.

Hi Ian, your Tamar looks lovely, I am building it too & fitting it with the P100 sound system. Does the Radar, Mast, Bow Thruster & Y Boat Door operate. What are you using for motors & props. Mine is at a stop because I fractured my wrist (left hand) & I am a left hander. It is a great kit to build, I have 720 BB turbo motors for it but not sure yet about the performance with them. I hope you make a Vid of it on the water, if it goes half as good as it looks it will be a winner, thanks for sharing. Mick B.

Ian, what a beautiful job you have made of your Tamar
I am finishing off a 1/12th Trent and I have fitted the Action
P100 and the Action 15watt amp running on 2 x 8.4 NiMh
I have also fitted the Action 8 way switcher that just pushes
into the P100 for the additional sounds that are installed
(horn, whistle, etc.)
The amp supply is o/k up-to 18v not lead acid though.
the P100 supply must not exceed 6v
the speaker must be 8 Ohm.
All available from Component Shop.
I have fitted a UBEC to power my P100 at 5v
If I am wrong with anything I have stated Mr.D.M (inertia)
will correct me.

Gentlemen, thank you for all your information and kind comments.
It was hard work for a relative beginner and took quite a long time to finish.
I hope that I will have enough room to fit all the sound gear and the speaker.
I will have to contact Component Shop to see how much damage it is going to make to my bank account.

With ref. to the questions by Mick B, radar and bow thruster are working and I have made the mast hinge so it can be lowered manually.
The Y boat door was a little too much for me to make it operate, but all the navigation lights work.
The motors are Graupner Eco 600's and the props are as supplied with the kit.
When I ran it on our lake I reckon it achieved at least a scale 22 knots but I will try and take a vid next time it's on the lake.

Cheers,   Ian

Hi,

My Slipway Tamar is now complete and has the sound unit installed. There is a video of its first run on Youtube under the title of

Tamar at Boundary Park

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38JCgd9e5ds

I was very pleased with its performance and am now looking forward to building a Thames Barge from scratch.

Cheers,

Ian

I know that the prow end is a little low, this is due to the sound unit but having said that I have had it flat out in choppy water with no problems.

Like the other two members I too thought it was a little low at the front,I would take their advice & raise it a little. You really don't want to have to dive for it & both the guys are very experienced. Mick B.

I think it is enough, if possible, move the batteries back.

Then take the speed alone and go up on the water like the real thing.
The power is sufficient

I have moved the sound unit battery pack (10oz) to the rear so I hope this will make some difference when I next float it on our lake.

Thank you for your comments guys, this is only my second build so I do appreciate any constructive remarks.

Cheers :-))

I have 720 BB turbo motors for it but not sure yet about the performance with them.
Mick
You crazy leprechaun! The 720 Torque motors are for the Fairmount Alpine; you should also have a couple of 700BB 12v Turbos for the Tamar. Don't mix them up or your lifeboat will perform like a narrowboat while your tug will plane!
Layout in Dr Wombat's Tamar is thus:
Bow-thruster and speaker are out of site under the foredeck

As you can see Dave I am easily confused at my age, but sometimes it makes life exciting, but then I look stupid at the same time, this is one of those times , LOL,OH, & tell Wombat to get rid of those awful couplings, come people never learn,  Mick B.

The following video shows 16-25 arriving on station and from about 1min 35 sec into it you will see how a Tamar planes at full speed.  During the video it does a number of high speed runs at a claimed 29 knots.

You definitely need to lift the bow.
