Eddie Stobart....... and other "quirky" interest?!
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:45:14 pm »

Do any of the members collect Stobart names and numbers,  we have quite a few people regularly outside where I work writing down, I presume the numbers and names, also photographing the lorries. On the way to Lakeside shopping last week there was a man on a footbridge doing the same thing.
I am interested why you do it.

A hobby  :-))

Though I do not write down the names the wife and I do 'collect points' when we spot an E S truck while out driving.

im sure just like train spotters and bus spotters they are a very sad group of people ? many of them will risk not only there own lives but that of others to get photos of their chosen vehicle being driven , twice in recent years ive had to take ivasive actions by some sad bus spoters leapinmg into my path to photo the bus following me up the road !

Just because we do not follow a certain activity does not mean that those who do are "sad". The fact that Stobart lorries are always immaculately clean, and that they are named, makes them easy to differentiate one from another, just like railway locomotives. Train spotting has been a hobby for as long as I can remember and, while I never took an interest in it, I don't regard those who do as "sad". I'm sure there are many people who regard we boat modellers as sad, too, but we know better, don't we?

Having said that, I realise that there are always those who will go to extremes, even to the extent of risking their own, and other's, lives, and this is deplorable. However, it doesn't mean that all enthusiasts should be tarred with the same brush.

I certainly do not think people who do this are sad, people could say that about people making models.
I was just interested why they do it. Like Peter I never collected train numbers, but even today there are people who do that.

They look like they come from all walks of life also, yesterday there was a young guy outside where I work in a suit, he looked like he had just left an office

I got thinking about this after seeing the guy above the motorway, while going on a shopping trip.

Yes Martin, there's an agricultural show near here where they have tractor pulling annually, the big 3.5 tonne and the 4.5 tonne tractors rarely put in an appearance, which is a shame, but the other classes are normally well represented.

When you get up close and personal to a tractor with a supercharged Rolls Royce Merlin running on open exhausts, it's one of the most awesome things you can ever witness...the ground shakes, your ears hurt, your chest vibrates...I love it. You think a blown 500cu in Hemi engined Top Fuel dragster is loud...you've heard nothing yet!

There's an annual show in Ipswich ( I think it's called the Suffolk County Show, or something like that) where they used to have tractor pulling, that's not a million miles from you, is it? Check it out and see if the tractors still appear there.

There's a whole lot of information on UK tractor pulling events here:
