Brass covers kit for Graham TVR1A steam engine
« on: March 25, 2012, 06:02:35 pm »

Hi all,
Glad that the forum is back running, but my account was lost and I had to register a new one. Which means all my subscriptions, messages etc might also be lost forever...

Anyway, I wanted to show you something. A friend of mine made these very nice brass covers (for me and a few other people) as an upgrade for the plain aluminium cylinder covers that come with the Graham TVR1A steam engine. They look like this:

Imho they give the engine a more appropriate and elegant look.
Here is what they look like mounted on my engine (with a further customization to the engraving):

If anybody is interested, let me know via email or pm, there is only 1 more set available. He's asking 35 Euros (plus shipping) for a set that includes 6 items as per the first picture:
2 domed top cylinder covers
2 steam chest covers with the engraved border
2 covers for the end of the valve rods.

KN03,

They look beautiful!

A couple of questions, however:

Are the cylinder caps domed on the piston-side, as well?  Because if so, I would think that would increase the "squish" area (or "combustion chamber," on a gas engine), and therefore unbalance the "compression ratios" (gas engine terminology, again, but I ASSUME the principle applies) between the top sides of the pistons and the bottom sides.

Or am I missing something?

If the underside of the covers are still flat, meaning it was either milled to be domed on the top side, and flat on the bottom, or the "underdome" was hollow, but then filled in with SS, braze, etc..., then I concede there is no problem.

Is there likely to be any more built, after these are gone?

Thank you--again, they're beautiful.

Hi, the cylinder covers' underside is completely flat, just like the original covers. The dome is machined from solid. So there's no dead volume added to the cylinder.

Unfortunately, all sets are gone. I'll let you know should any more be built in the future.
