Waterproofing sponge ? old Lesro RIB
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:26:37 pm »

Hi, many years ago I built a LESRO RIB, it went very well once !!!  >>:-(   The question is re the waterproofing 'sponge' that sat around the bottom of the seating area to make it waterproof.  Can you still get it or what do the submariners use to seal their boats ?
A wee pic of my problems attatched   :o

You could coat it with something like latex, we do a glue based on latex called ` Contact Bond ` you could also use Copydex ( also latex ) , paint it on and let it dry , give it a couple of coats, fully waterproof when dry , very flexible and wont crack with age

I would have thought that almost any silicon rubber could be painted on to seal the foam or perhaps a careful coating of bath sealant.  If you wanted to strip out the old foam and replace it there some stuff called "Sugru" which you could use.  Interesting stuff, lots of model boat use I think check it out on "U-bend" sorry, "You tube".

Might be being stupid but what does the picture have to do with the RIB?
Are you intending to get the RIB running again? If so then a picture of the actual problem would be an idea.

This may help, I have, along with others, used this (scroll down to GA73-76) to seal radio boxes.

If that is what the RIB is to sail in, it illustrates the problem quite well.
Is the sponge a block that provides flotation or a seal to keep water out of a flotation compartment?  If the latter, the strips would help, if the former, then the latex will form a waterproof skin.  Its basically what balloons and similar items are made of, and they are known good waterproofing items for radios etc.

How about using polysterene foam blocks or table tennis balls?

Hi All, sorry if I've confused you.   The model RIB is long gone, I jumped on it in frustration in the end!!!  No the problem is in keeping water out of various model boats, the Corvette being one of my models.  I also have a Perkassa (Precedent) and a Lesro Rapier which also sail in those conditions.

Sorry but it doesn't it shows a boat in water, little rough but so what... Same as now, a good picture of the hole to be sealed and what is to cover it would help.

For the type of model you are showing is it possible to use a coaming and seal?

The RIB is an open boat and to sail in that kind of water would need sealed flotation, like a sponge covered in an impermeable membrane strategically placed. Now that it has been established that the RIB mentioned is not relevant to the question, yes, a coaming and the sealing strip.  Possibly a bilge pump, just in case.

hi, I've got a coaming and lid in my boats, it's how to seal it which is the main question.  A few have suggested silicone sealant which I already knew about, I was just wondering whether there was an easier and less messy way of sealing the coaming.
Where would I get/buy a sponge covered in an impermeable membrane is what I'm really asking ( I think !!!)

I've just looked at a previous answer and they use a rubber seal from PMB Model boats.  That would probably do the job unless someone else can come up with a better or easier solution.

Thanks w3bby
