Out of such chaos - perfection!!!
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:09:30 pm »

I am always heartened to see brilliant models photographed in the owners workshop. By studying the background it is often possible to see that this perfect model has emerged from complete and utter chaos. When I look at my own cluttered, untidy, excuse for for a building area, I am pleased to see that I am good company. I do tidy up occasionally, but only as a last resort when I cannot find something vital.

Some people may think that tidiness is next to godliness, but my view is why waste time tidying when you could be modelling.

So what camp do you belong to? A place for everything and everything in its place or a place for everything, usually the place where you last put it down, dropped it or threw it in disgust.

At the moment I can't even get a hull on my work area......... got something to do with the 400 or so war gaming models that i've got to paint along with scenery for this summer's campaign.....the "joys" of running a successfull war games club lol.

I'll get tidied up around October and get cracking with my hulls then so i've got a couple of the kits finished and r/c'd in time for the new season next year. I'll be starting with my 1/350th KGV and 1/550th Kiev ( soviet era VSTOL aircraft carrier ) just to get back into the modelling habit then crack on with my small fleet of fishing boats !!

My work room is very cluttered.
I start off with a total clearance, and then start a large model. As the space around vanishes, I? look for a smaller project etc. When I get to the point where plastic magic is to large, then it's time for another tidy up.

My work area is neat, tidy, and clean.  No cameras are allowed!  Would I lie?

My working area has approx. twice the size of a towel, though I have to roam up when I have finished. Otherwise I can not start the next job. It has a little (a very little) advantage doing modeling in such a small space. But to be honest- cleaning is not my favourite.......

I've got the entire roof of my bungalow, which has a railway suspened from the rafters running around it which leaves me with the centre bit. As for working area, well I sometimes find what I am looking for within an hour or two or three. I have sails for a marblehead hanging rom the middle portion, tubs screwed to the partioning wall and for the big stuff the conservatory which resembles a boat yard.

As with most modlers the bigger the working space the faster it is to clutter it up, Pygmies would feel cramped.

Normally, I have to share building space in the workshop with the car.   Imagine my delight when we brought our new car home last week and found that it is too tall to fit under the garage door!!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, I DIDN'T choose the car for that sole reason..................at least that's what I told SWMBO!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, let`s see it in another way: Why can not something very special come out of a chaos? This planet was also created out of a great chaos, after a Big Bang......

And so do we at the workbench. A practical example of the Genesis: How to create something out of the chaos....  ;D

Hi all

Tidy or untidy, in my expereince all workshops share the same physical proprties:

They are never big enough and no tool is ever in its place or where you last left it  ::)

A friend of mine has a workshop (no joke) with about 82 squaremeters!  :P
Can you imagine? He is claiming: It`s all too small!  ::)

Not real sure how much I'm enjoying this thread.  It made me feel a little guilty, so cleaned up the work area yesterday.  Filled two 50 gal. trach bags with stuff I'll probably regret throwing away.  A garden/yard rake helped, so did a 'weedeater' to move the stuborn(sp) stuff.  I draw the line at mopping/waxing the floor, lets dropped things bounce/slide into hiding too easy!  Any suggestions on getting 'bird-shot' out of a carpet?  Plays !@## with a vacuumcleaner...

Hi Doc,

Once new a guy who dropped a couple of cartridges whilst reloading, he sucked the shot up with an old cylinder type vaccum, not to much of a problem But when I sucked up the powder the bang blew the end of the cylinder cleaner, gave the wife a heart attack and the dog was'nt seen for two days.

Now I use a good old hand brush & dustpan.

I often listen to Genesis in my workshop, but didn't they go off after Phil Collins took over vocals when Peter Gabriel left?

There's nothing more worthwhile than spending an afternoon in the shed doing some top-notch engineering, and listening to some classic rock!

I was cutting some spacer blocks the other day for my dinghy build, I didnt realise my young Labrador was around, as soon as a block fell off the workmate she had it!
Never did get it back!

Well as I am starting from scratch I can honestly say my workshop is clear......not a tool in sight, no clutter, no nothing. But then the builder is not due to finish it until Friday! ;D

French Law requires a security fence around the swimming pool. My workshop was the filter/pump room and garden tool store at one end of the pool. My lady wife agreed that a nice wall to match the house would be the most appropriate security fence for us and from there it was but a small step to convincing her that I should have an extension of the workshop done as well! ::)

So, next week, I shall take possession of a brand new workshop, 9m x 5m. However, I have roughed out where the work benches are going and where the machines, cupboards etc. are going and......I don't think it is going to be big enough! ;)

... as I have seen on the poll the majority seem to agree, that a small nuclear device had exploded.
Now there is just one way to get the workshop nice and tidy:

bend a wastebag at the opened door and start another (controled) explosion on the other end of the workshop. The shockwave will blow it all in the wastebag (and you will have a new hairstyle as well). But it`s all roamed up anyway!

A modelers problem just can take a modelers solution! For any questions about the bang- just tell her that you have had an idea of working with pyros....  ::)

I have run out of space in my attic workshop and have now moved out into the garden. It's plenty big enough but suffers from draughts and rain! I hope my ?5 tarpaulin holds out! Andy M
