its my scratch built FLIGHT A D I (Artificial Horizon)...
« on: September 24, 2013, 05:39:55 pm »

Good evening all of my Friends.. last week i was spending some time in live cockpit, of a classic air craft, and one of the ever ispired instrument in the panel was the A D I, or Artificial Horizon.. how nice it is.. when back home, i was in a great excitement, thinking about the same instrument.. so, i came to an idea.. why i cant make one for me..? so, after some thinking and sketches, came to some simple ideas.. and excitement...

this one is not accurate, or nothing when compared to the original criteria of an ADI.. but this one is only a scratch built toy, with some handy things.. still it inspiring me a lots...

heart of the arrangement is a plastic ball.. the drive arms and all other things, include covers are by foam board.. with a little matte black paint and some computer printing.. and some enamel paints.. the power is actuated by electric motors.. some old torch and decoration bulbs for lighting.. then after the completion.. i love this one soo much..

the plastic ball is sliced to the need and painted as sky and earth with sky blue and brown enamel paint..

as i was not in exact calculations. the unit became not proportional in total shape.. but still i loves it..
at first i checked it with L E D s for lights.. but ordinary bulbs gave me more realistic effects..

i am planning to incorporate a 4 channel radio system, to one like this, so can fly the aircraft with holding this unit in hand.. hope it works.. and also willing to add a 4 channel radio system, to fix in a boat, one sends back the attitude signals to a unit like this, as boat starts to run in water.. nothing.. but think it will be exciting.. as the attitude indicator plays according to the attitude of the boat..

Great Idea, clever build.
 How is the ball suspended?

Look at picture 2, at that point it's not a full ball. There's a weight in the bottom of the ball as well.

yes.. i was checking out in my Vento.. at driving seat, it was not much inspiring.. because, i have to listen in driving...but from the adjoining seat.. it was so nice to watch...
Martin sir, it is simple.. the ball is sliced at half, sure, to save space.. but no weight is added on plastic ball, but a servo arm like pice to attach the drive rod from gimbal..and yes the ball is fixed to a simple gimbal.. sadly, i forgot to take photographs while construction, before applying the black paint.. now i am working on a new one, more solid, and a second one, to add a radio system, for boats.. in my concept, to turn the boat, i can simply bank the unit to port or starboard side.. i am working on it..

the power is actuated by electric motors..

Didn't read that bit, thought you were using the pendulum system. To use the unit as a "remote" control you're going to need some really light movement pots, might have to go to hall effect.

There's been a hand held multi axis "Mouse" on the market for a few years.
