Model Boat Insurance
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:04:58 pm »

Hello,
I need to get some insurance for my rc petrol model to use on  a lake in the New Forest. Does anyone know of any good companies that provide insurance for models?
Cheers Reece

Hello Me3.
I have used a Company called Walker Midgley, they have been covering model insurance for many years, I have no connection with the firm but have used them in the past and found them very helpfull.

You could also join a club as most include insurance in the subscription. Also the Model Power Boat Association allow you to join as an individual member and that includes £10M of insurance for £22 per year.

I think the British Model Flying Association will insure you as well, and they do equipment Insurance.

Hi Reece,
Most provide the same model boat insurance, which is underwritten by Royal Sun Alliance. So looking at the price for the same product.
Look at the price for first year and then renewal. As written above you have Walker Midgley (An insurance broker) or the 3 model boat associations:
British Model Power Racing Society (BMPRS)
Model Power Boat Association (MPBA)
Offshore Model Racing Association (OMRA)

Another thing to look at is there Health and Safety policies and what waters the insurance covers you on.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers

Hello Reece,
Join a model boat club. I am a member of Southampton Model power Boat Club, whose insurance is arranged through Walter Midgeley. Be careful about where you operate ic engines in the New Forest, unless you know you are allowed to use the lake you are on. The Forestry Commission controls it and as well as requiring insurance operating lakes are quite tightly controlled. Any problems go to club site at www.southampton-mpbc.org.uk and get hold of Secretary Tony Edgeley, who knows all the rules, and problems!, backwards.

Thank you all,

Buccaneer, we would like to join the club, but it is seems to run from March to February but I would like to be able to use the boat before March and the price to join the club for a full year is a bit dear just to last until February. We have contacted the Forestry Commission who have replied saying that we can use the lake for I/C as long as we follow the rules, which we are prepare to do, one of which is having insurance, and I can get insurance for £18 for a full year. Is the club able to discount the price for the rest of the year?

Hello Reece,
Bear in mind that the club annual fee has to include a small amount for admin and running expenses as well as Insurance. The Lake is about a quarter of a mile from the car park, with a locked gate across the access track. Club members get a key to the gate and can drive to the Lake. Get in touch with Tony Edgeley, details on the Southampton Model Power Boat Club website, and see if you can negotiate a part year deal.

The club rules seem to imply that the lake can only be used by club members but this may not be the case as long as you have the required insurance. Tony can put you right on all this sort of stuff. Hope this helps.
