Scale
« on: January 03, 2015, 10:35:58 am »

Morning all,
Standard scale? Have not got a clue.
The original boat was 33' long and my model is 33" long = 1/12 "err" I think?
I need a figure approx 4" (100mm) high, what scale would this be?
Any good suppliers you have used?

Thanks: Ralfred

Your figure would be 4'-0" high at 1/12th scale, which is same scale as the boat.
1/12th is a standard imperial scale, but there are many others.
If you want a different scale figure you need the full size height. ie at 1/1 scale.

Hi Ralfred,

Try Adrians figures, don't know if he has a wedsite.

Macs Mouldings and Models by Design,

All do 1/12 scale figures. Maybe not what your looking for but could be adapted.

Some people use dolls house figures which are 1/12.

A 4" high figure is about 1/17th scale. (17 x 4" = 68" = 5'8")
A 1/12 scale figure is about 6" high.

Hi Ralph,
I think I may be able to help but will need to measure the figures to make sure, I have a couple of figures (came with a boat I bought but don't look right on a tug) that may suit your needs I will take the measurements tomorrow and be in touch. Looking at your launch they may be in keeping with the theme fingers crossed.
     Cheers,
        Peter. :-))

As has been said 1/12th scale figure are about 6" tall (about 150mm)  There ain't a lot of figures around but I know Mac's Mouldings do 1/12th boat crew.  They have interchangable heads so you can ring the changes a little.
http://www.macsmouldings.co.uk/page10.php
Another option are Racing Car pit crew figure by Tamiya.  These are in kit form and readily available off Ebay.  There a limited number of poses and they all have dodgy 1970s haircuts.
Action figures, also off Ebay,  can be had around 6" tall but the choice of poses can be limited unless your'e planning fight zombies or aliens off your boat. Which is unlikely on the Manchester Ship Canal.

as cj says a figure of 4" high represents a figure of around the 1:16/1:17 scale which is a common size in modelling......but what confuses me is that you are trying to fit a 1:16 scale figure to what you think is a 1:12 scale boat...............and that just won't work.......the figure will look so out of place that it will be  VERY NOTICABLE and totally incongruous to the model............you just can't mix scales so wide apart I am afraid, unless the figure is to represent a  very small man like Warwick Davies ( aka R2D2) or a small child........and I think that is what others have tried to say, but in a round about way. neil. {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ %% %%

I have to agree with problems of scale mentioned above.

The difference in these little folk really does become apparent when finding them for boat gear at 1:12.  The size really is critical. Even if you get the height right, the size of the head or the length of the legs will influence the overall look.

Thanks for the posts gents, unfortunately I seemed to have made a basic error,
the boat is indeed 1/12 and I measured the internal dimensions of the wheelhouse for the figure Therine, without remembering that I raised the wheelhouse floor in relation to the superstructure to allow for a much bigger battery, this is how I arrived at the 4" figure size.
6" is indeed the correct scale size for the figure, I will have to try and obtain a seated figure  :embarrassed:

Sorry to give you all the wrong info and to waste your time.
