Smallish Jet Drive?
« on: October 08, 2013, 06:11:54 pm »

Greetings,

Contemplating what to build next, one of the ideas is something with a jet drive. But now when the Graupner Mini Jet has been discontinued, is there any (commercially available, not too expensive) jet drives suitable for smallish boats (e.g., a modified Glynn Guest Triune)?

There have been some offerings from the Orient
on the bay at about 15 coins of the realm but I
have no idea as to the quality.
I think for that price a motor is included.

I bought one a while ago Ned......it seemed ok for the price, and came with motor......I ran it up with a battery and although a little noisey out of water, it went well on 6 or 12 volts......and for the price, I couldn't see a great deal to go wrong, and if it did, to anyone with a basic in model making I would think repairable.

horizon hobby sells this replacement part for their r/c duck decoy, it is roughly 75% the size of the graupner mini jet:

I recently got hold of 3 of those chinese jet drives (without motors) and like Neil said there's not a whole lot to go wrong with them.  I married some 6v motors from a dismantled Heng Long tank gearbox to them and ran with a 30A ESC out of an model plane (doesn't need to have reverse) and they run great.  Watch out for stripped plastic where the self tapping screws fit but they could be replaced with bolts.  The clip-in screen for debris is a little weedy (no pun intended) but for the price you could do a lot worse.

The KMB drive (the smallest one) is interesting, but p'haps a wee bit too powerful (200–400W, and lots of thrust, IIRC).

The Horizon duck drive might be worth looking into.

Any other possibilities – not on ebay?

I don't know whether it's important in this case but the Horizon one doesn't seem to have any reversing bucket, nor does the one that Ned noted.
