what scale

gents,  if a figure is 36mm what scale would it be. Have looked but found nothing  in any of the sections

The problem is not that 36mm is a big strapping bloke in 1/50th scale or an avearge sized bloke in 1/48th scale It what the scale of the parts of the boats are.  Six feet is used as the standard measure of scale figures so that a clear indication of scale is achieved.  It would be better when determining scale to look at a known dimensions of the boat rather than figures, once you've established the scale of the boat you can decide wether or not to use "Big Olaf" or "Wee Jock" to crew her.
 
I prepared this chart to help me visualise the size of figure needed for boats.
