MFA Fantome (again)
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:41:45 am »

Evening all, I have previously asked about converting my old Fantome to brushless but have kinda given up on that idea and I am now considering dropping a 26cc engine into it, I think they were originally intended for either fuel or nitro power, does anyone have any pictures of them setup like that, also did I once read about one being used for either a channel crossing or some other endurance event? I vaguely remember seeing something in Marine Modeller many years ago.
Thanks
Phill (mermod)

Testing my little grey cells to the maximum, the Fantome was originally designed for the Fox 22cc petrol engine (although I stand to be corrected on that)

I wonder if one of those china 26cc engines might be a bit too heavy for the old girl although I did run a 12v7 and a 12v4 through a hectoperm with reasonable results.

When I had my first Spearfish, that ended up with a watercooled Bullet 30 electric motor on 24 D sized nicads, that would outrun practically any petrol engined boat in our club at the time..

Love it  :-))  my old girl had the Hectopern gt500 and the 24v setup, I would give the other guys a false sense of security and cruise around on 12v then slide the trim forward to engage the second battery, I still have some footage on VHS somewhere.
Breaks my heart to see her sitting on the shelf gathering dust.

Even if you use an 'old' brushed motor, converting to Li-po cells will give you all the advantage of a lighter boat with the same power output - or an increase in power for a similar weight.

Go to brushless and use Li-po's and it's even more power for reduced weight....who needs infernal combustion nowadays?

I could really fancy another Spearfish on  brushless/LiPo setup...

I love brushless but don't get on well with lipo's I have a lovely collection of expensive good quality lipos for my planes that were always balance charged and never run too low however after not being used for 6 months half of them look like pufferfish, also I do a few all day demonstrations and being able to refuel and go again would be an advantage.
When it come to my boats, give me NiMh and AGM any day.

As an aside (sorry to nick your post, Mermod) does anyone know if MFA still manufacture their range of boats? I can't seem to find any anywhere?

Your experience of lipos is completely counter to mine.

I find them fantastic batteries and easy to look after. In contrast, I've always found NiMh's to be a complete pain in the bum to look after, as they discharge at such a high rate. Eneloop NiMH's are okay though, but no good for high discharge applications.

Maybe you might want to look at Lithium Iron Phospate (LiFE). These are more rugged than some of the other lithium batteries, although slightly less energy density.

Thanks guys but really cant a guy just have one petrol boat in his collection, hence why  I was asking about the model original setup.

Why not? If you have somewhere to use a petrol engine, then do it. We aren't so lucky here, the green meanies don't like noisy smelly engines and so we are limited to where we can run i.c engines.

Much of the problem with i.c is down to the twits that like to run their boats sans silencer. That in addition to inconsiderate sailing practice leads to complaints, and then the authorities act, and ban them.

Small engines produce a lot of high frequency racket, especially two stroke engines. If they're correctly muffled, which need not cost you any major power, they can be very quiet indeed, no more innocuous than an electric model.
