Hello Meyhemers, a total newbie here aged 57!! could do with a good bit of guidance in completing a project. I recently inherited a part built Precedent Perkasa 37" ish fiber glass hull, it came with a MFA torpedo 850 motor, brass prop shaft, 50mm 2 blade prop. The hull is fitted with all the support structures but none of the mounting brackets for motor, speed controller, servos etc, the deck is not fitted though all the superstructure is assembled.
I wanted to keep costs down so elected to keep the motor, and on the advice of a local model shop bought a Mtronix tio marine 30 ESC and a spectrum SR 301 to go with a spectrum DX4e i already had from an RC plane, i would also like to run the boat in some 3S li pos i already have too.
I managed to set the li po position on the ESC OK then wired the whole set up as shown in the wiring diags for the ESC, i then tried to bind the receiver as described in the instructions but to no avail, Doh! The ESC now has a continuously flashing led which is apparently fails safe mode.
so here are the questions.
  Do I need to unbind the transmitter before I can then re bind to the new RX, If so how do i unbind.
How do i get the ESC out of fail safe mode so i can start again.
Will this TX/RX combo ever be any good for my application, I am not wanting to be a superstar model boater, I just want some thing I can mess about with occasionally.
Same goes for the the motor,ESC, battery combo, will it work, is it sufficient for the size of boat.
If I need to change any thing then  please advise an alternative, i don't mind buying new parts as long as the whole thing works.
Last question for now, when I come to paint the wood deck and superstructure is there anything i can do to fill the wood grain.

Hi,
Maybe it won't bind because the DX4E is an Air radio and the SR-301 is a Surface receiver, in says in the SR-301 manual:

"The SpektrumTM SR301 3-channel DSMŽ Sport Surface receiver is compatible
with all Spektrum surface transmitters and operates in DSM mode."

The Spektrum air receivers start with an "A" like AR400 etc

Best ask the model shop to see if they can confirm.

I believe there are three types of Spektrum -  the original DSM, DSM2 and DSMX I don't know the various combinations of compatibility between these and your TX. It would certainly be a question for your model shop if you don't get an answer here.


One thing I would say is that Spektrum Air type receivers work well in boats, and you don't need the special surface or marine ones, which tend to be more expensive.


Finally, you shouldn't need to un-bind your old receiver.

I agree with going back to the model shop.

Ask him to set it up and demonstrate it in front of you.  If it is an incompatibility between the TX & RX then he should be able to provide the correct set up.

If the tx was originally for fixed wing, the throttle stick presumably is not sprung, but on a ratchet, is it mode 2 (throttle on left?) That esc is a reversing one, so might need resetting without reverse, ie stick needs to be at bottom, you cant have it 1/2 way as there is no neutral on a fixed wing tx (sorry if you know all this!)

If the rx was for plane use, and your tx was mode 1 , then the elevator slot on the rx becomes your throttle, I am rambling now!

Get a separate power source, and plug into batt slot on rx. Turn tx on, and go through the bind process with a simple servo plugged in to throttle, stick all the way down, and possibly tx throttle trim also (make sure all previous settings are deleted. Not sure with the 4, but on dx6 as you turn on the tx you have to hold the top left switch to enter bind mode. Take one thing  at a time,  forget the painting questions till you have the electronics sorted, you will end up going off at too many tangents
