Radio Hams - How about a model boats net?
« on: June 24, 2007, 05:59:39 pm »

Judging by some of the posts in this section, there must be quite a few model boat builders who are also radio hams. Does anyone fancy joining a model boats net. Depending on the location of the participants, this could be on HF, VHF, Echolink or eQSO.  If you are interested, post a reply together with the bands/modes that you can access.

Hi Peter

the answers yes as regards sailing waters,
No possibility at all to put up antenna's here, waiting for the big move where land is aplenty, few weeks only now.
Everythings (almost) in boxes ready... [even unstarted kits]?

Not a bad idea Neil, but VHF might be tricky, even just for Southern England! I am QRV on 6m, 2m (FM) and HF 40 to 10m SSB and digi modes. I only operate on 80m for contests, via temporary vertical antenna.

Might be worth a try on 40m or via the echolink node on my local repeater GB3OK.

Nice idea, though I think HF would be best given the distances involved. Trouble here is that neither of my two grown-up children seems to want to fly the nest (cheaper at home!) so there's no room for the shack. Gear is in the loft and HF antennas were in the garage last time I looked.

If anyone who is interested could let me know their callsign, preferred bands & modes, I will try to set something up. Either post on the forum or send me a PM.

Have you had any responce or is it looking grim...? Maybe when I get my M3*** I will have to give you a shout and see if anybody wishes to join in. IE put a post up that we are going to be on at a certain time and frequency and give it a bash... I can get plenty of high ground from where I live so its not going to be a prob for me here in the dales...

Good luck with the M3. Not much feedback yet but we can try to get something going when you get your ticket. What is your QTH? I am located in South-east London.

Sorry for the slow reply. My QTH is Skipton North Yorkshire Gateway to the Dales. Top place to live. I cant see there being much of a problem on HF if its quiet but then is HF every quiet. Italians with 1kw+ lol. I seem to get alot of East and west but not alot of North or south so I have plans for a new second longwire the one I have up at the moment is just under 160m long. Not bad eh..... its where I live which makes it possible. Nothing but fields and trees behind my house.....OH and lots of antennas..
Anybody used the old Magic band lately it always seems very quiet to me but then I suppose thats why its Magic...he he. Soon as I recieve my licence I will be going up to HAWES its up here in the dales and its just under 2000 feet so that will be my Night ands days camping spot to work what I can as a new M3. I do understand alot of the original Ham licence ppl wont even speak to a M3 but thats the way it is. Its not a problem as there are plenty out there who will.....

Another SOTA I will be doing will be Pendle Hill in Lancashire near Burnley I think thats 1800feet and understand its a very good spot to transmit from. At the moment I only have a Yaesu FT50 portable and a ICOM IC 225 Mobile and HF is a Yaesu Musen FLDX400 Valve + FRDX400 which I am going to sell due to its NON portability. 25kg each so its a heafty weight. Not just that I dont want all the power there so nobody can grumble or presume I am using it. I know most radios these days have over the M3 permitted 10w but Valve radios do tend to KICK it out better than Transistors in my opinion. I was thinking about something like a ICOM IC 706mkII or a Yaesu 897 I think...... 8)  Any ideas what radios you lads like. BTW the Valve yaesus will be going up on Ebay soon. 2 fully forking and 2 spares Mint condition still got selafane on front covers.... No idea at a price any ideas you lot.... ;D

40m should be OK over that distance but I will have to tweak my antenna system to operate on that band. Echolink will provide an on-line alternative.

Yes we have a node up this end. Alot of ppl dont like Nodes they say its not radio but its a good idea. I personaly think it tops. If ya on the radio one evening and the freq is clear , zilch , nobody then ya can use a node and talk to anyone in the world ,within reason. Anybody got a idea of what price the Yaesu's should go for on ebay all 4 and bits...?

Hi people.     FANCY TRYING 70CMs Tonight!

Well we are doing a contest yet again tonight ( 18th March ) I will give more details this time and then it may make life a bit easyer.

Its a 70Cm's contests and SSB we will be on between 432.200 and 432.320MHz.
Start time is 8pm to 10.30pm
We will be using a 88ele J pole Beam (18db) on the back of the landrover with 20watts under the club callsign MX0BCQ/P Thats with the Craven radio Amateur Group. It would be nice to hear some of you on and don't be shy to call into us. I will be the operator so if you are unsure about anything like a locator try this link http://www.dxzone.com/cgi-bin/dir/jump2.cgi?ID=13877 find your house and then click on it then in the box will be your locator code. If you cant see your locator just try to zoom out a bit then it will be visible. When asked for a serial its like this.

First contest contact will be 001
Second contest contact will be 002 ect ect.

So if I am your first contact you give me my signal report which may be 5/9 001 or 59001. Thats all there is to it.
Right i hope to get you on the bands and don't be shy. I need the points.

BTW I am located at Skipton North Yorkshire for those with a beam. IO83WV

When the contacts have been submitted I will return to give you a report when the results have been sent back to me.

All the best
M3XLG

Ham radio offensive?

Only if you Hog the repeaters!
G3/M3 arguement.
We did have a 'class' problem here in Norfolk for a while, the G3 group did not understand quite what was going on with the license changes. They were very worried that with the supposed;ly 'easier access' to the hobby , that standards would slide downwards until Amateur Radio became just another CB band with the sad reputation that goes with 11m.
By setting good and proper training standards, with good guidance on operating techniques/etiquette , most of those fears how now been allayed.

Try to do things in the accepted manner, and you will be welcomed to the bands.

Sure , we have a few 'dinosaurs' who claim that to be a proper amateur you must be proficient in an outdated, but none the less effective mode, at 25 words a minute (CW), but after all 'they don't have to be  good at SSTV, PSK, Packet,APRS, ARDF,RTTY, Field Operations, Contests, etc to be a 'proper' amateur do they?

We also had the old chestnut about 'home brewing' equipment.
Silenced that one with a question at the local radio club with a show of hands.......
Who has been 'on the air this week?..............several hands went up.
Next question...who has been 'on air'on homebrew equipment this week?..........no hands raised....even fron the 'city fathers'!

Case for the prosecution rests!

Also a mock full license exam paper passed around resulted in a stunned silence!

Good luck to you.....go for it!
Play by the rules and enjoy the hobby!
