Seaforth Clansman Plans
« on: January 28, 2014, 09:10:48 pm »

Hi Everyone

I have purchased a plastic hull for the Seaforth Clansman. I can find plenty of sources for plans to build her , pre re-fit, but now she has a Helicopter pad on the bow. http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1909796

Does anyone know how/where I can get plans for the updated version. Or should I aim to build to the main plans and convert the build accordingly.

Please bear in mind that I have yet to build from scratch. I have only built 2 Graupner kits in the past. This is to be a major undertaking on my part.

Thanks

Hi Ken.
You would be better to construct the model "as built per plans" Built in 1977 she changed her name to Grey Seal (Until 1994)
Zealous (Until 2001) and is curently called St Barbra.  MOD chartered her for a while in the 1980`s and was used to salvage the Holland
 submarine.

hi ya there

there are 3 models of this Seaforth Clansman that I am aware of - 2 of them belong to Brian Chambers (who is a member of this forum) one of his models has the helicopter pad on, the other one is built as the plan, whether Brian obtained plans for the helipad or if he built it from photographs I am unsure.   He goes under the name of Brian-C on this forum and Brian is from Tynemouth - so send him a personal message he may be able to give you more details.

The 3rd model of the Seaforth Clansman belong to Marc Rigden, or Riggers24 on this Forum.   This model has several working features and was built plank on frame from the free plan which was obtain from the Model Boat magazine which did the build for the styrene hull, which covered about 4 issues I think.

There is a lot of prethinking to be done if you want working things on this model.   To give you an idea of what can be made to work - on Riggers' model, originally it had front and rear bowthrusters - a fully working crane - jib up/down - slewing left to right and the hook lifting and lowering.   It also incorporated a working diving bell and also working fire monitors as well as lights.  As you can see it is entirely up to yourself how much working features you wish to add to this model and it will be a lot easier with today's electronics as the original was built using microswitches and converted servos.

Just some food for thought.

HAPPY BUILDING

and let us know how you get on.

Aye

You should have asked, I have a set of the original plans in storage! I don't think I will ever get around to building it.
