Glue for Ceramics?
« on: February 24, 2014, 11:09:31 am »

Manage to break a ceramic wall uplighter last week ( don't ask  >:-o  ),
I've read that epoxy is the best glue but as it such a clean break;

1.  Are there any Superglues that are good enough?
2.  Where there is a bit missing, is there such a thing as white ceramic filler?

Nearest thing I've found to a ceramic filler is white Milliput.  For glue I'd use epoxy or high viscosity superglue.

Squadron White Putty will also fill ceramics.
Agree on the high viscosity super glue.
Epoxy can colour over time if it gets any heat from
the up lighter lamp.

Ah! Heat! I forgot to factor that in!

If I use Superglue, the joint will need reinforcing on the inside..... hmmmmm!?!

All I can say from experience is that superglue will glue a ceramic Chinese soup spoon very well indeed, but a few years down the line expect to get caught when it comes adrift in a hot bowl of soup. >>:-(

We supply ceramic restorers in museums cyanoacrylate for repairs, medium thickness, the only reason they dont use it every time is that its hard to undo the joints compared to our conservation cement

Conservation cement is like a balsa cement but a different polymer, it is the most used in museums and by antique restorers for ceramics, non yellowing and heat & water proof, takes about 5 to 10 minutes to set

Epoxies , some yellow, some dont! ,  its down to the exact formula, ours doesnt yellow with age or heat unless heated above 160C
