sms emden
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:55:29 am »

Hi all, I'm in the last couple of months of building sms Emden. Circa 1913. As I have a spare funtion on the radio instalation I fancied putting in a sound effect. I would like a steam whistle or siren. The question is what would it have had and what would it sounded like? Any and all ideas welcomed.

Seeing as how the Emden had steam engines, then i would say a steam whistle would be the one to go for,..you can get a sound module on ebay..that will give you engine sound and whistle

she was powered by two quadruple cylindered Triple expansion steam engines so her beat would be slow and rythmatic.....and most of the sound systems on ebay are of twin compound engines which give a totally different beat.

I would search on you tube and other media for a sound video of such an engine as different configurations of steam engines sounded different and down load one onto a DVD for future transferal onto an sd card......if you can't find one, and I have seen many on Youtube, then the James Cameron film Titanic has the very sound you need and could transfer that onto a DVD as this was very very close to that of the triple expansion (heard one many many times on the trawlers sailing in and out of Fleetwood and the sound is indelibly printed on my brain) and if you can lift a sound from this, you can then down load it onto your sim or micro sim to play on one of those sound units.

well, to tell you the honest truth, my real love is for fishing vessels, and especially old steam trawlers in particular, and never happier when super detailing an old side winder.

that's where my love of ships and models came from seeing many an old behemoth sailing down the river wyre either inward or open bound to and from the fishing grounds.........from an age where I can't remember I was so young in the early 1950's I would gaze onto the horizon and see them coming home, black smoke spewing from their large stacks, and by the age of around 9 - 10 I could name each one as she anchored in the deeps two miles out..........

never happier when building one of those.
the last two I built though were a few years ago and the large one L04 was an adaptation of a Mountfleet models St Nectan, heavily modified.

all beautifull and interesting. I agree about the engines, but I'm trying to find out about the siren. Many warships had distinctive steam sirens, but I know nothing about German practice in the early 20c. Any ideas?

yes, sorry chas for hijacking your thread......possibly a trawl through you tube video same as steam engine sounds might reap rewards.......can't say more than that.

As there are no sound recordings from the period, any steam whistle will do, and if anyone challenges you ask them to prove it conclusively.

As for engine sounds, steam powered vessels, especially anything larger than a small coaster, were and are all but silent so why people waste their money on such devices is quite beyond me.

There is a german movie called Die Mannen Der Emden  (The Men of the Emden - rough translation).   The word is that the CGI portrayal of the ship is supposed to be accurate so have a look on youtube or some such and you might be able to find a soundbite.

Thank's all for the help. Tailuk, that was a great idea, entertaining too. I've used the film as a guide, and will download a suitable sound clip. It's deeper and more 'linerish' than I expected for a cruiser. It all adds to the fun.
