The difference in scale is small enough that no-one will notice the difference.
Since stanchion height varies whether 2 or 3 hole, you need to know the height of the original.  Then you can start wondering whether the quoted height is to the top of the stanchion or the top hole.

Hi all, I go by the practical use of the stanchions.  If it is a ship then you can lean on them comfortably, if it is a sailing yacht you have to step over them for taking ropes and mooring up etc. So nothing higher than the inside leg measurement!

Guard rail stanchions on merchant ships were generally between 3' 6'' and 4' high, so in 1:70 scale height would be between 15 mm and 17.5 mm

Howard, an SD14 would not have had ball type stanchions, they were flat bar. The nearest match that I know of are produced in etched nickel silver to 1:72 scale by James Lane and are 13.8mm high, he can also supply rolls of soft brass wire to form the rails. I think he can still be contacted by phone on 01670 352051
I hope this helps, Chris

Jim Lane is still alive and kicking, although he doesn't advertise any more.
He also produces much more than just stanchions!
He's very helpful....and ask for his product list.    BY.
