Vintage IC race boat, Help with ID please ?
« on: March 16, 2014, 04:13:07 pm »

Hi all
I have had this little boat in the shed for years having rescued it from a car boot sale. Never really looked at it until today! I get the feeling that it may have been an ok boat in it's day and wonder if anyone can shed some light. Some details:
Cast into the stern very neatly is the word 'Hurricane'. The rubber engine mounts are cast directly into the GRP hull. The engine is an Enya 21X double ball raced and sits on a rather well constructed open frame gearbox again running in ball races. The fuel tank is enormous and designed to fit the hull. It's 32 inches long and 12 inches max beam. 2 futaba s148's and a futaba receiver came with it. I was about to put it on flea bay but it looks kind of interesting and well constructed so thought I'd enquire here if anyone thinks it's worth the effort of restoring it. Even the manifold looks really well constructed from steel and from the angle of the exit pipe I assume a tuned exhaust was originally fitted?
any thoughts out there?.....cheers....mike

Hi Mike
There were a lot of that style of multi boat in the late 70's early 80's.
Although I don't recognise the name "Hurricane", the general shape and rounded transom with the moulded name is very similar to a "Hawk" hull I once owned.  It was one of a range of hulls made by John Stidwell and in their day were fairly successful.
I don't think the Enya would have been used originally - far too slow.  More likely a rear exhaust, possibly a .45 (straight drive)  judging from the two tuned pipe mounting holes in front of the radio box (and the dent in the front of the fuel tank to make room!).  The fact that it is fitted with a parallel flexi drive shows that it has been further "modified", as all multis in those days ran solid shafts.
The gearbox is either home made or "Racing Models" (John Stidwell's trade name) from the shape of the gear.  It was from the same era, but usually only used on 21's (3.5cc).  To be honest there is absolutely no point in putting an Enya on a gearbox as they don't rev very high anyway.

If you want something to sit on the mantlepiece and annoy the missus, then by all means try to restore it - but with the cheap hulls and engines available nowadays, I'd bin it and make a nice new one!
Cheers
Danny

Hi Danny
Many thanks for your response and I guess I'm none too surprised. Not sure how I am ever going to come to terms with the loss of the £3 that I gave for the whole shooting match but someday I might get over it !!
As it is my firm belief that it is possible to sell "Sky Hooks" and "Long Weights" on the bay of fleas then that it where it will appear in around 5 minutes. At a start price of 99 pence  I predict a riot.....lol
Cheers :-))   .....Mike
