RNLI MODEL LIFEBOAT RACE ON THE THAMES
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:29:15 pm »

I have just found this item on the internet
http://rnli.org/howtosupportus/getinvolved/events/Pages/alternative-boat-race.aspx?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=adcreative1&utm_campaign=RNLIboatrace

In which the RNLI are hoping to race 250 model Lifeboats along a section of the Thames before the actual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge.

On the River Thames beside Kew Gardens, between Brentford Marina and the London Apprentice pub.
London
TW7 6BGWhen:

Start Date: 6 April 2014 15:00

Contact details:

events@rnli.org.ukEvent details:

The greatest boat race to grace the Thames is arriving in London this April (and some teams from Oxford and Cambridge are up to something too)
Before the Blues battle it out on 6 April, 250 model lifeboats will race along the tideway just upriver of the official Boat Race finish line in the RNLI’s Alternative Boat Race.
You and your rowing club can take part by sponsoring your own lifeboat, decked out in your very own club colours while the entire race will be broadcast live on
Youtube.
If you’re having a Boat Race party at your club, why not warm up with a competitive element and cheer your own boat on its way? Whether your entry ends up a trophy-winner or bringing up the rear, all teams will keep their model Severn class lifeboat after the event.
RNLI lifeboat stations on the Thames in London are among the charity’s busiest, and their volunteer crews rely on your support to make their 700+ launches a year possible.
There’s no entry fee to take part, all we ask is for you to fundraise a minimum of £1,000 which will be split 50:50 between the RNLI and your club, giving all your members a great motivation to get involved.
One final fundraising incentive – the club that raises the most money will win a masterclass with 2013 World Rowing Championship bronze medallist Adam Freeman-Pask.
Register todayand you’ll get our event pack filled with fundraising ideas and inspiration.
Registration will close Friday 28th March 2014
How about it guys?
Anyone near enough  please register, and have a great day, while raising some funds at the same time?

They're using the tank-steer Severn models, but I don't think they'll be controlled, more of a pooh sticks type thing.

They'll release them and let them float down with the tide.

(expect a few to turn up on Ebay...)

I wonder if they let 'proper' models in?

If I got my Tamar finished on time, I could well have a chance of winning, the motors onboard are far too big.

Oh dear, I've been thinking.  Why not hold a Model Lifeboat race ? Maybe down a canal somewhere? For the RNLI. Who would be up for it then?

Well maybe the Chichester Canal + The Southern Model Lifeboat Society and friends would make a good combination.

Im not sure where that is. Do you have a map ? But It sounds Good to me. The next thing is when could hold it. Maybe a meet up on Friday night. Race/run over a mile on Saturday and a BBQ in the eve Home on Sunday. Is there anywhere to camp/caravan near there?

Here is the topic on the existing Chichester canal event: http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,38284.0.html

I have not been involved with it myself but I have walked the Canal and in my humble opinion it offers the potential opportunity for a really good model lifeboat event. Tony Olliff lives not far away and I'm sure he will know it.

Thanks for the info Colin. looks like its been done many times by model boaters. It may be a tad overdone but Really nice setting i'm not surprised it is well used.

I have not given up on the Idea just for Lifeboats somewhere. I have a friend who lives and works on the canals I will sound them out.
