Rother lifeboat plans
« on: April 01, 2014, 11:16:46 am »

Hi all,
Does anyone know which magazine(s) had the articles which went with the plans by L W Jones for the Rother class lifeboat. The plan number is 1286 and when I got them they were supplied by Nexus who were then the publishers of Model Boats.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the link - I didn't phrase my question very well. The plan number is prefixed with MM so it should be covered in Model Maker magazine. What I need to know is which issues covered it.

Hi, do you want the plans themselves as I have a copy of them also a copy of Model Boats December 1980 issue where it contains a Rother class lifeboat feature and inside I quote, "Leonard Jones provides a detailed analysis of his fine 3/4in to 1ft scale model of a 37ft 6in model"  This is 1/16 scale.

Just to add to may last the MM stands for The Model Maker Plans Service?  The article in the magazine covers five pages, hope this helps? :-))

Hi David,
Thanks for the offer - I already have the April 2004 Model Boats and have it scanned to my computer for safe keeping. The Metcalf kit builds into a nice looking model but I think it is bigger than the 1/12 scale it is supposed to be.
If anyone is building this kit as Alice Upjohn the forward hatch should be on the port side not in the middle which would be correct for some of the other members of this class.

Hi Slinger,
I didn't know about the Model Boats December 1980 article - sounds like it could be quite useful - have you got a scan of it I could have?
The copy of the plans I have is a digital print not a blueprint like they used to be. Had them out today and the drawings looked a bit big for 1/16 scale (they are marked 3/4" to 1ft). Measured them and find they have been printed at 115% - bit late to send them back! Was going to have them enlarged to 1/12 anyway.

Hi all,
The last of the original Model Maker magazines was published in 1966 before it was incoporated into Model Boats. The first Rother wasn't built until 1972 so very unlikely the model was described in Model Maker magazine - no wonder I couldn't find reference to it. Also the free plans in Model boats still have numbers prefixed by MM. Whoops, I wasted quite a bit of time there.
Found the contents listed for Model Boats December 1980 - includes a plan feature on the Rother (by L Jones) so I think that is what I have been looking for.
