1 12th scale railings?
« on: April 27, 2014, 09:58:04 am »

The boat refurb is nearing completion, but the existing deck railings are woefully out of scale. They would about knee height in real life.
So i need some brass 1 12th scale railings and stanchions.
Anybody help please?

Can you easily get brass tubing in Cyprus, if so get the right size tubing then solder on some brass eyelets and if there two hole drill out the bottom one .Otherwise it would either be either Metcalf mouldings or models by design BUT they are white metal and you would have to paint them

Hi

Don't know where to find brass ones I'm afraid but Model Slipway have white metal ones.

I'm off to my favourite alladins cave this week to see what I can rummage. But I need 3mm, and small diameter brass tube is not common.
I have contacts in the Uk who can ship it to me, but the postal service here is a very poor joke (our postman is a 20 year college student who can only deliver every saturday during term time, and parcels are only delivered on alternate saturdays!
Dont want to wait a month or two.

But the main problem is if I stick to 1 twelfth, the stanchions need to be around 80mm high. I cant find any over 50mm, which scales up to only 2 ft high.

i saw a good tip to use brass split pins for the stanchions, and I've found online pins that go to 100mm. I'll have to see what I can find.
Not fussed if I have to paint white metal, just want something that looks right with the minimum of labour.

I think it would be about 35mm.
Single wire running through a top ball.
If the top wire/rail is knee high, I wouldn't
think there would be a lower wire.
I stand to be corrected though!!.

Ned

PS just read you're post Bob

80 mm at 1/12 is over three feet so a big guy
if knees are that high.

Working on 1/12th scale, a 6 ft man would be a six inch (150mm) figure. A safety railing would need to be at hip height, so allowing for enough metal to insert into the decking to keep it all stable winds up as 80mm overall length on the pins.

Well, I found some 90mm stainless split pins, and 3mm brass rod.
Offered them up to the boat and it totally overpowers the look of the whole model. The cabin windows are obscured by them. UGLY!

So i dont care about true scale any more, I'm going back to the original 30mm high x 1mm wire railings, which allow you to ignore them when looking at the boat.

Its all finished, going to put it back in the water tomorrow, and see if it still works.
