About 44, Maplins own brand, went into a somewhat modified HMS Quickstep (thank you, Glynn Guest) as steering only because I couldn't spare the cash for an ESC back then.

1979, 28 yrs old and a Rau 1X kit............with a Futaba 6 channel 27 meg   radio.............sold to me by Redbank models when they were on Redbank Road Bispham..............the whole lot cost me a fortune to begin with......the radio set alone cost me £120 quid in those days, lol........only got rid of the tx last year to someone on here, lol

until then for the previous 20 years all mine had been free runners with just a motor and a rudder ratchet to steer or static models.

I was 52 when I bought my first radio unit, we couldn't afford one before that, as they were very expensive back in the dark ages :-)  I was into flying in those days, and RC was much better than chasing free flight around a paddock O0

Hi all now I come to think of it in my mid teens I had a boat that had a cam driven tiller I had made up from a slow electric gearbox, so that you never reaqlly knew where it was going next.  Things haven't changed that much.

The age of AM KRAFT radios, with four wire servos.

Then those AM 2 channel Futaba Attack radios, black plastic boxes with the old extension antenna.

Aerokits Crash Tender at age 30. Model had an OS 60 glow engine and was initially fitted with a Waltron 4ch r/c set, this was then replaced with a Sanwa 2ch 27meg set.

Well the first radio I ever owned was made by the next door neighbour when I would be about 12 - it was, I remember, single valve floor mounted thing with a 6 ft aerial and a bloody great big Ever Ready Battery and you had a push light switch which operated a continuous rotating servo - operating the rudder only and I am pretty certain the circuit diagram came from Radio Weekly magazine??? One thing I do remember about it was, whilst the neighbour built it, I watched him - the resisters had a dot on them rather than colour bandings.

I moved on from diesel powered home designed models onto hydro planes.  So....no requirement for radio then.

The first one I purchased was in 1976 and I had to save up for it and that was a Futaba Attack Sport and its still working and I still have it.

Not easy to pilot a glider with that   >>:-(

HI Bluebird resistors, they were a very old type , if I remember it was body - tip - spot to read the value.  I watched an uncle build a radio from a kit in the late 1940's and I would find the next component for him to solder, so learning the values..  I was hooked after that.  But those things were very expensive.
I ended up learning electronics in the RAF on air radar this was after the Queen asked me if I would like to help her run the RAF for a bit.

You could say - 67 - as I haven't got there yet but plan to have something simple in my next boat. Just trying to make a decision on what it will be! It doesn't help that the nearest model shop that could help is some 30 miles away in a town I rarely visit.

about 14 I guess, at the local youth club, a modeller started classes (he bought his wife who ran the badmington) the youth club subsidized the purchase of Horizon RC units and we all built a few planes and boats from the same sets of plans (powered flight, gliders and I believe it was a leander class frigate).

14 or 15 with Galloping Ghost RC built into an Oxo tin as Tx. Crashed the plane and never got the boat in the water. Long hiatus, the took up model boating aged about 50. Built a free plan stealth boat from model boats to get on the water and then a Brittany Trawler from a purchased plan. Now on my 12 or 13th boat (I've lost count  <:(  )

as most boys... i started out at about the age of 12 with control line aircraft...
at some time i acquired a used Sea Commander (boat) and a MacGregor push button RC gear..
could not have been much over 14 years old, then i acquired a Ripmax Futabe (cream in colour) now was it four or six channel i can not remember... this radio gear was used in aircraft...
later in life i transferred to boat again and bought my self a Brand Electronic Microprop gear, a while later i switched to Grauper and now have and still have for over 20 years
