Aircraft Diorama at 1/48 Scale
« on: August 05, 2014, 09:09:20 am »

Gidday Armo61 here. While I have been away from the site for a wee while, I have been still modeling but in the form of 1/48 Scale Aircraft.
I am currently working on a US Air scene where we have a B25 Mitchell Boimber and it's escort being 2 P51B Mustangs. The scene will be complete with fuel truck supply and aircrew and ground crew.
The location of the Diorama is New Guinea during the Second World War. Still much to do but just thought I would share the work so far. A couple of Spitfires are being done also as I have another 3 in my holdings to do another British Diorama.
Anyway here the aircraft etc are at this time.

Thank you for your kind comments eddiesolo.
I have found a suitable board to spray as a runway now and am awaiting glue and some paints to start finishing off the aircraft. Still have to order another US Fuel truck and I am still undecided as to what other aircraft to add. I have a P47 Thunderbolt kit and also also the old F4U Corsair both US aircraft so I might take away the Spitfires as I have another 3 in the boxes and then keep this Diorama all US.

Just for interest I also have 6 German Stuka's along with the 1/48 Tamiya kits of a German Motor cycle and sidecar with the 2 figures and also 2 German aircraft power supply units with Kettendraftrads which are small tractor type little vehicles with caterpillar drives to make them suitable for all terrain work. That will be a Diorama in itself.

I have found I am enjoying doing these things as well as my Ship modelling.
I will add pictures for those interested in Military Modeling to show you progress.

Hello again, I have been doing some more to the Diorama. I have started on the Jungle dirt runway and have also done a lot of work on the Aircraft.
I am still awaiting another P47 to add to the one I have to make a duo.
The underneath of all Aircraft except the P47 will be painted Medium Gray and I have ordered the paint for that and the P47 needs it's Rockets painted White then mounted.
After painting the Mustangs will just need a final going over and the Mitchell will have its underneath parts added and also the front Gun Gas exhaust.
It showed a picture of a front gunner but the kit did not supply one. I had some spare crew and seats from other models so I added the Gunner and seat to the front guns. Looks good and gives it a much better effect.

Very nice, big too :-))  Nice detailing on the aircraft, the dio board looks good too, a lot of space that you do not get too overcrowded, easy done when thinking of dio boards.

Like it very much.

Thank you for your most kind comments.
I have also started a German Diorama which will consist of 6 German Stukas along with associated vehicles and ground crews. I will have to do some research on the Stuka crew's as only one came with a pilot and a gunner.
Here is a picture of the completed 1 and the rest are still to be finished painting and assembled to make up the 6 I need.
Cheers Armo61

Good Day to all fellow Modelers.

Well I have finished the Jungle Dirt Runway over the weekend and now, it is still in the process of drying. Added some more rocks and Logs in position and will respray when set to make sure all is fixed in place. I have sourced out a couple of 1/48 Bulldozers which I will put together and place along the sides of the Runway as though they are clearing the rubbish away. I will be ordering another US Fuel Truck also. I want to try and source O Gauge Palm Trees for some more realism if I can find them.

I am awaiting delivery of another B25 Mitchell to go along with the one already positioned and also another P47 - JUG Fighter to partner up with the one already positioned.

Here is how it looks as at today.

Very nice, one long runway... :-))  I know how hard it is to get palm trees, I sourced some ages ago for a dio and paid an arm and a leg...they were just plastic jobbies too!

Hello HMSAntrim many thanks for that link, unfortunately I do not have a 3D printer and in fact do not even know how to use one of those. Wish I did probably would save me heaps.
Might have to look into them. Thank you. I have made 3 tents up and have placed em but still have to do the guy wires to spread em out a bit. I will take a pickie n post it here when done.
I managed to acquire a Boston Night Fighter which flew in New Guinea in 1943 on 3 mile runway so it would fit in nicely on this Diorama. It being a Night fighter will be finished in Flat Black according to its colour scheme and it has some very nice decals to go with it. I have also another Mitchell B25 so am tossing up with the idea of either one. I do not want to make the finished item over crowded.

Have you tried www.eduard.com

They do some paper ferns, palm leaves and all sorts of fauna and flora. I think they do it in 1/48 and 1/35. If their brass sets and model kits are anything to go by and their recent fabric seat belts with brass buckles are truly brilliant.

Gidday fellow Aircraft Modelers.
Here is a Dassault - Breguet Mirage III E I am working on and just waiting for the decals I ordered and a touch up on the wheels being the black colouring.
I am still working away on the Diorama and will send pictures of updates when I do the Mirage final pictures.

Thank you very much Slug for yer info, Yes I will have a definate look at the Palm Trees as a few I be needing soon. I have yet to order my 2 Bulldozers but I will check some of my model ship kits I have and will find a US Flag for the flagpole to put up. I will also finish off the Jug and need to get her rockets painted white which I will do today. I have another to build yet also. I was thinking of adding a couple of Spitfires but decided to keep it an all American affair. I have managed to secure a Lancaster Bomber so with the Spitfires that could be another future Diorama along with the 6 Stukas and all of the associated gear and little men to do a German Luftwaffe one also. Time will tell. I am busy working on a 1/48 scale Super Hornet as used by our RAAF as I am starting to build a collection of aircraft used by the RAAF and also when I was a member, Past up to the Present.
Thanks for that Slug.
