Hi Herby,

You need the simplest of tools to cut it, a sharp modelling knife and a steel rule to guide with. I use either Humbrol modelling filler or Revell Plasto depending on which is in stock when I need it. Thickness of sheet various according to the scale of what part you are making. The wheelhouse of my Sirmar TID tug uses 30 and 40 thou plasticard and I tend to keep small stocks of sheets as thin as 10 thou up to 60thou thickness. For the decks of both my Sirmar HDML and TID tug I used 1/32" Birch Ply which is held in place over ramin strip with balsa crosspieces for additional support and to form the curvature where required. A lot of people seem to use plywood but I prefer the softer wood as I can work it easier with handtools.

There are two good books you need to buy:
Scale Model Warships by Tim Morgan
Making Model Boats With Styrene by Richard Webb

You can get these from Trapplet Publications

When following plans the best thing to do is draw the details on graph paper, also do a height diagram and take ito account the deck thickness, any coaming arround the deck edge and the thickness of any cladding sheet you put on. On modern warships where you have sloping bulkheads you need to draw the vertical sides side on to get their true heights.

hi there,
All the guys have given sound advice for working with.
When I started a good bit of advice I was given was to cut
things that you are unsure of out of scrap bits of paper/ card
then you can use it as a template once you are happy that you
have got the correct shape you want.
I used this idea for my first boat and ended up with 2 superstructures
1 card  1 plastic  ;D
but it was better than waisting lots of plastic and i still use it
where i get complex bits to work on

The other thing about plastic is don't try and cut it all the way through. Just score it once or twice (or more depending on thickness)and then snap along the score. Try it on something not too precious first.
