which filler for ply and question on a pilot boat build
« on: October 21, 2014, 09:35:08 pm »

have a few more questions, one for previous pilot boat builder

have some small gaps, probably poor measuring or cutting but hey its my first

what water proof filler to use ? mainly bottom of boat

also part of plan says section through centre of hull ?

in this video below 3.18 of the kit ? it mentions  a keel to be built , is this what it refers to in my plan, really confused by this part

There is NO filler that is waterproof it is the top coat that seals it ..........if you are using Matt paints on it my advise would be primer...rub it down.....spray laquer on it ...rub down then spray primer then top coat.

Epoxy filler is waterproof.

If you have the original plan, which was for an all plastic boat, there is no keel shown. As you are going for a ply version a keel is a good idea as it will give something to glue the bottom panels to. Without a keel you will need to glue 1.5mm ply edge on to 1.5mm ply not a large surface!

It appears, from your post, that you may have tried that. In which case I would mix some epoxy resin with micro balls and use that as a filler along the length of the join. You should first cover the seam on the outside with masking tape to prevent the filler from leaking through any gaps.
