Sound Modules
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:08:55 pm »

It seems to me that the Firms making Sound Modules haven't as yet produced modules for moderate sized twin engine diesel boats, & even for single engine boats the choice is bleak.
I know the engine sound for my lifeboat is in musical terms about 'Low A' rising to 'B' as the revs rise,  but all iv found as yet appear to be 'D', 'E', or higher, plus there are some that sound nothing like a boat, I heard one today that sounded more like someone tapping a tin mug wi a teaspoon !
If im missing a good manufacturer, please inform me  {:-{

Have you tried the Canadian firm ?
Old age has left me memory challenged tonight, but the name will come to me.
Used one in a 1/6 tank and was even able to change gear change points. Absolutely superb .

modelsoundsinc.com I think I remember.
Canadian company with a very clever man at the helm. Tell him what sounds you want and he will find them, and put them on his product.

You could also try Mtroniks and Action Electronics(Component shop) who also do diesel sound units.

British company's product has the facility for the user to change engine revs at idle and peak (and thus everywhere in between) for the price of a CD-ROM - currently a fiver. See here http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/art.php and scroll down to "P100 User Manual Part 2". Page 34 et seq refers. David Harrison of Canadian company is an exceptionally clever man but you must be able to "speak the language".

Check out http://www.beier-electronic.de/modellbau/produkte/usm-rc-2/usm-rc-2.php

More than just a sound module - takes a little time to get your head round what it's truly capable of!!

Can play up to 4 sounds simultaneously - on board 2 x 20w amp
Can also switch up to 12 lines / create a sequence to control servo's for say opening closing door / create a switching sequence to represent flashing/strobing lights etc etc/ Play random sounds by itself

A big plus is how you trigger additional non throttle linked sounds as you hold the control stick on your radio for either a short or long time in up to 4 positions per stick.

You can use sounds from CD or add your own and play any standard .wav file all stored on up to 8GB micro SD card - you can even make it into a juke box as it has a wav player function ( play/stop/next/prev), link sounds to events - flash 3 leds in sequence (you configure your own timing of sequence) and play siren at the same time

Check out this I know it's a truck but gives you an idea of what it can do - all the lights / stall - flicker of light/ engine are all controlled by the USM RC 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tpYHtsocFE

@rsm Iv already checked out Mtroniks, & rung Component Shop, neither of which do suitable sounds for my boat (I even offered extra money)
@Stavros You say *Download the sound you want* from where ? I cant find it as yet.
@Inertia Yes, I do want it to be interactive with boat speed, but none of these manufacturers produce a boat sound anything even near low note enough for my boat, on tickover its approx. 'Low A' on a music scale, rising to 'B' on revving/

@david48  Either twin Perkins or twin Thorneycroft, as fitted in the Oakley 37ft (as in my prof pic)  but because the exhaust is at/under water level its  an exceptionally low engine noise, & without any 'treble' as many have.

Check out this - single diesel needs to be configured for 2 engines which is possible

@G6SWJ, thanks, but that's too high a note, & too 'pistony',  mine needs to be much lower, & raw noise, as if you put a straight through  boy racer exhaust on your Skania

David
The P100 Instructions include a section which describes how to convert a standard WAV file into a suitable format for downloading to the unit. The CD-ROM supplied includes a copy of Audacity software to enable you to carry this out and the manual gives stage-by-stage directions, including screen dumps to show you what you will see. All you need is a suitable recording or recordings, which would ideally be from the real vessel. The twin MAN diesels and twin Caterpillar diesels on the P100 CD-ROM were recorded, formatted and made into a sound set by Mike Pendlebury, who posts on here as Gribauval. He very kindly gave them to ACTion for the P100 and may be able to help with the particular engine sounds you need. Mike Mayhew provided many of the narrow-boat engine sounds, also in ASF format for direct transfer to the P100.
The idea of the user-programmable sound unit was reached because no manufacturer could reasonably be expected to obtain and catalogue a library of all possible sounds and offer them free - that would be practically impossible as well as commercially senseless. There are dozens of sound libraries on the Internet, many of whose sounds are free to non-commercial users. Anyone who wants to use them for a commercial reason (e.g. a model sound unit) however, has to pay a hefty license fee. This would need to be passed on in the purchase price i.e. asking the customer to pay for sounds which he may well not need. That's the reason that the sound library is limited as it is. I don't know if either of the other sound systems mentioned here have this DIY facility - I suspect they don't. Sophisticated as they are, the Canadian system is very much oriented towards model aircraft sounds while the German system is a truck and tank module.
I don't have any commercial interest in ACTion any more (apart from helping out at shows) but I think the P100 would be the most suitable if you want to record and play back a specific engine sound. As I usually say, suit yourself.

The sound that you hear, irrespective of the source, is what comes out of the speaker.  A small speaker in the open air will always lose deep bass, even though every single item mentioned earlier stores and processes the lower registers to a true HiFi level.  With digital sampling, what goes in is what comes out, plus or minus the quantizing distortion which is dependent on the sampling rate, and usually appears as a background hiss, normally too faint to hear.  It isn't the electronics losing the sound, its the interface between electric and air.
It might simply be that the laws of physics as we understand them will prevent the size of speaker that you can use from fitting in the boat that you want to carry it, with or without making the boat into a proper loudspeaker enclosure.

Sound is a funny thing when I go to Aberdeen to ship spot all the rig ships pass about 60 yards from the Quay side and you can not hear them just a faint hum as they pass when thy are turning you hear no more sound ,there is only a bit more exhaust smoke ,even when the are going out and give a bit more revs out of the harbour it's only exhaust smoke . Also the pilot boat is hard to hear . So maybe we are all trying to hard even me  with my Noisy Thing in my Fairmount.

Inertia,

"while the German system is a truck and tank module."

Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true! Simply not true!

Why do they include 23 sound configurations for boats - and have a stunning configuration system if you want to switch boat lights specifically see pic attached (hopefully)

Have you owned and used one or is this just an opinion?

Any body else use the USM RC2 is a boat? - better or just different than other options P100 etc? lets have an open discussion and then people can make their minds up.

Thanks to you all, but this has now got so technical that im lost, I'll get my IT techie girlfriend to try & decipher it over the weekend.
@david48 Iv found & listened, again its too light a noise.
@malcolmfrary  I do agree with your 'small speaker' points, which makes it all the more bizarre that manufacturers don't include a 'Bass/Treble' switch as standard (which I could then turn fully to 'Bass only')

Inertia,

Quote from Inertia - "I don't know if either of the other sound systems mentioned here have this DIY facility - I suspect they don't."

WRONG for USM RC2  They also include Audacity and you simply add or edit their or your own .wav files and save them onto your up to 8GB micro sd card
