Spinnaker sail cloth from a sail maker comes in all sorts of colours including black. If you can find a sail maker local to you he would probably have loads of off cuts that will do what you are looking for. The other think is it also comes in a number of different weights/thickness’s

I'd love to see closeups of all those other models in the background!  O0

Ripstop nylon is best. Get  heavy weight one though.

Hi,

What about a model yacht sailmaker?

They usually have plenty of odds and ends.

Regards

....although his offcuts are liable to be a lot smaller than the full size sailmaker - many full size offcuts would make a full suit of IOM sails!

Would thick black polythene (rubble sack from a hardware store) work?

 Hi Tim.
Did`nt know you were a member of MHA Model looks like a set of vacum bags atached to the side. Dont know is the model is static or going to be working but what about. NEOPRENE.  used for waders wellies dive suits  etc.  have a look and see.

thanks for the help so far guys

i have attached a cut away of the full size and this is my mates idea too

My guess is that the pockets have baffles running from back to front hence the ribbed shape when inflated. For reliability  there are two options, 1) make up bags as per the original using  4 oz. Polyurethane coated polyester, which is air tight material but needs a glue sourcing or heat welding at the seams. 2) make up the deck in laminated wood as I did for the RNLI model. We have since found out they were blown up with an onboard compressor and then topped up due to the failing of air tight material available at the time we think the model had one too
