However this bring me onto the main comment.......£7.00 for Adults, Children (under 5 free) & 5 to 16 £3.00 is an expensive day for the typical family of four
Sorry to tell you, Derek, but it's a very cheap day out compared with what's asked at many popular leisure parks. I know the names will mean nothing to you in Australia but I've been doing a bit of research into the cost of "leisure days out" in the UK.
For example, Alton Towers is one of the best known of these attractions. A day ticket for a family of four is almost £160 - and that's the cheapest I could find on a Price Comparison website. Thorpe Park is almost £240. These are on-line prices, booked in advance. Turn up on the day and you'll pay more.
For the more traditional family days out, Woburn Abbey Safari Park is £71 while Whipsnade Zoo is £65. A Premier League football game for a man and two lads would cost nearly £200 (by the time you've added up the admission and all the assorted fast food, car parking etc together). Even a little local farm park where kids can see and pet animals will charge you £37.50 for that same family of four. The only thing I could find for a similar price to the Haydock Convention was the Notts County Agricultural Show (Adults a tenner; kids under 17 free), and that's outdoors.
Haydock Park charge the organisers a rent for the show, and I doubt that will be peanuts because it's a quality venue. Frankly I'm amazed that any contribution to charity can be made, let alone eight hundred quid. As for expensive administration, I believe that Jean and Arthur Barlow do most of the organisation and I doubt very much if they would take anything for their efforts.
It's a fact that many - if not most - of the folk who make model boats are what we call senior citizens (myself included). It's unfortunate that their idea of what constitutes a fair and reasonable price for anything these days seems stuck firmly in the 1960's.
