Motors, and motor equivalent
« on: January 13, 2015, 06:44:52 pm »

After receiving some good advice, from a seasoned mayhem'er

CEM or caldercraft 900 high torque motor. Is there an equivalent out there, or a better one. For a heavy boat 1200 long.

Do Johnsons deal with us public, or do they only deal with people with big orders ( companies )

I probably need quite a few, is why im asking

cheers

Chris

Hi, probably a lot, I recall talking to Allister Graham, Of model motors direct. He said the order he had to put in was in the range of 1000s, I think it was for his 555 motors. Nemesis

My advice is to avoid those Johnson 600 motors - see main Model Boat Mayhem>Electric Motors>Fast Motors>(Scroll down to) Bad 540 motors.

The guy who last bought in a batch of Johnson 960s (for his golf trollies) had to buy 5000, and he said he really had to twist their corporate arm to get less than 10,000. He no longer makes that model of trolley, hence the supply of his surplus motors - and those that were water-damaged in his storehouse - has finally dried up. I don't know who these Caldercraft/Model Boat Bits Johnsons are coming through but they are slower than the the original MMB/ACTion ones by a factor of two. For even bigger motors you're looking at car heater blowers etc or very expensive industrial types like Buhler.

Thanks,
I read that article before I joined mayhem.....as I need all the help I can get.

I have avoided Johnsons on ebay......

I like the fact you can go to mfa and you will get a discount based on your order, I doubt caldercraft ( jotika ) or what ever would be so obliging....

Are you saying the cem 900 isn't as good as it used to be ?,  is it still better than the torpedo 800

I will probably need 10 or so for now, hence why im looking at all avenues.

Cheers for your continued input

Are you saying the cem 900 isn't as good as it used to be ?

No. What I did say is that the currently-available version of the big Johnson motor, sold by Caldercarft and Steve Tranter, isn't the same as the previous version sold by Mark's Model Bits and ACTion, or by Graupner as the Speed 900. The older one was rated at 6000RPM @12v while the present one is 3000RPM. "Better" is a very subjective term and depends mainly on what application you have in mind.
Looking at Johnson's website I can't find any motor of a similar size with a performance anything like either of these. All the 48mm diameter ones seem to have a nominal input voltage of at least 14.4v and a no-load speed of around 20,000RPM, which is of no real use for a model boat on direct-drive. I guess that these are mainly for cordless power tools which have gearboxes and big Li-Ion battery packs.
MFA's website gives full technical specs for the 800. It is a 3-pole motor, rated at 5167RPM @12v unloaded, whereas the Johnson is/was multi-pole and therefore much smoother. I think you may possibly need more than just one big order to obtain full trade discount from MFA, but I suspect that any supplier might be amenable to a smaller discount if you were to order over ten motors.
