3D printed model leaking
« on: February 13, 2015, 06:44:58 pm »

Hi all. I got some 1:1250 models printed in (frosted ultra detail FUD) just over a year ago by shapeways . I have not got round to painting them but the have sat in my showcase with other 1:1250 model boats. yesterday I went to move one and it was stuck to the glass shelf. It came away ok . looking at the model in some places it looks like resin s leaking out . it is sticky to touch.
I was wondering is any one knows what is happing and a possible fix?

I would have thought Shapeways would have been your first point of contact? They are the makers and should be able to give you the answer?

Bearing in mind it is a Plastic the type of plastic and its properties would need to be known.

An example, the erasers used by draughtsmen have a paper wrapping around the centre.
If you completely removed the wrapping and placed the eraser on a Perspex set square or the like, for a period of time, it would start to fuse, melt, to the Perspex. Also happens when different plastics come into contact with each other.
The metal working people have similar problems, called juxtaposition of metals, one eats/effects the other.

As stated ask Shapeways.

Looking at there site, the plastic is printed from acrylic  resin cured by uv light,

Many uv light resins remain sticky after cure due to air inhibition of the resin, you should be able to wash off any sticky resin from it ,

It could be a slightly under cured part needing more UV if so put it in strong sun, under cured resin would find its way to the surface eventually

Most probably due to air inhibition of the cure of the acrylate/methacrylate monomers on the surface
