ships flags
« on: February 23, 2015, 10:27:18 pm »

Hello Everyone.
This is a cry for help, a friend of mine is building a model of the Duchess of Fife, a paddle steamer built in Govan 1903, he has come up against a problem, in so much he is unable to identify the flags she would be flying whilst in service, he knows she would carry a name pennant aloft, with a pilots flag on the bow and the Companies flag on the foremast, are there any other that would be flown in service whilst afloat and sailing.

A red ensign on the stern, I would imagine.

Hi Howard,
It depends what era your friend is depicting in his/her model.
From 1903 - 1923 Caledonian steam packet co., pilot jack at bow, name flag (white with red lettering) above company pennant on mainmast, red ensign at stern. Name flag not always flown, sometimes just company pennant (yellow with red lion rampant).
I modelled her fleetmate, Marchioness of Lorne of 1891, and I just have company pennant & red ensign on model.

From 1923 - 1948 LMS Railway, as before but with LMS houseflag instead of Caledonian pennant. During the early 1930s she sometimes flew the red/white pilot flag under the red ensign at the stern, sometimes the pilot flag flew from mainmast about half way up.

from 1948 - 1952 BR again the same general idea, but with BR houseflag replacing LMS one.

There are no strict rules to follow here, in later years photos show the name pennant less, maybe it was flown more in summer. There are photos with no flags at all, or just the red ensign.

Worth noting that there were changes to the ships livery during these different periods, and some changes to her appearance also.

hope this helps,

Clark

Meant to mention the book "Memories of the Clyde, Duchess of Fife, 1903/1953"
ISBN 0 9516140 0 2

An interesting collection of photos showing the ship under construction, and in service, and showing flag configurations throughout her life. Very handy for the model maker.

Thank you both for your rapid response, I have ordered the book from Amazon for my friend and it should be in his hands shortly, it is always a pleasure to see any of the old vessels being modelled, and it can be guaranteed someone will be out there on Mayhem with the knowledge to complete the task. Thanks again.
