Detailed drawings or plan
« on: March 13, 2015, 04:23:02 pm »

would anyone have any idea where I can find detailed drawings or a plan for HMS Penelope (1933-1944) I have some semi scale plans but I want to go closer to scale. I've an interest in this one because my grandad served on her ( fortunately not when it sank) ?

I have a scan of Norman Ough's plan of the ship I can email you if you PM me with your email address. You might be a be to get a bigger version from the Brunel Institute http://www.ssgreatbritain.org/brunel-institute
who now hold the David MacGregor collection of plans of which Norman Ough's drawings form part.

I am reliably informed that she was Blackpools adopted ship. There is a superb model of her in St.Johns Church,Church Street Blackpool Centre. There is also a memorial to the ship.Apparently the plans for the model were obtained from the Blackpool Council! May be worth a try!
The Imperial War Museum has plans in their archives, which are probably the most comprehensive you will get,but they do not come cheap.
Good Luck

Hi,

I have emailed a forum member about this as I am sure he has plans for Penelope.

Just as a matter of interest HMS Penelope is acknowledged as being the fastest travelling ship ever to have been hit (and subsequently sunk) by an aimed torpedo (as opposed to a lucky shot).

All the best

I think he is checking to see if he can locate it.

I'll let you know as soon as.
