If you are going to use these for planking, look for a wood with very fine grain, otherwise it will look odd at scale.
I did see a lot of basswood (aka lime/box/linden) strip and blocks in one of the big hobby superstores a while back, in the modelling section. That is very fine grained.

Hi,

I've used both these companies for my Edwardian Steam launch ( see http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,37563.25.html )

http://www.woodveneeruk.co.uk/products.php?cat=Samples

http://www.originalmarquetry.co.uk/

As you can see, they can supply a whole range of "samples" of the size and type you need.

You might need to consider the correct glue. I've been using Weston's yacht epoxy, but whatever you use, be aware that some wood substrates (i.e. ply ) can absorb the glue too much and create dry patches with no adhesion; you may have to seal the wood before hand with a thin coating of glue.

Like all new techniques, try a few experiments first.

Ian.

There are loads pf photos of Huntsmen on the Fairey Owners Club website. In particular there is a restoration blog by Scott Pett of his H31 "Mirak". https://picasaweb.google.com/116493500049865636778/1968No5Mirak  The majority seem to use teak for decking; there's an interesting remark that the caulking work, if done by a commercial company, would have cost £3000!

Buit a lot of Fairey boats, most of the originals from the 60's had teak decks. The 31 inch model,s deck strips would be about 5mm wide but 6mm looks good too.
Try to get hold of a copy of Model Boats July 2013  my article ,Away with the Faireys, shows you a way of doing it.
Real teak is hard to get and poses problems of getting varnish to stick because it is an oily wood. The suggestions already posted have merit and a good fine grain brown coloured wood will do nicely.
Happy boating

On real faireys the teak would not be varnished.
My Huntress was decked with bare teak.

Quite right, Teak is not normally varnished but weathers to an attractive silvery grey colour. Varnish is for upperworks.

That would be hobbycraft..... got a couple of big packs of mixed balsa from there for 2.00 a bag last weekend.

Possible source of teak (or other solid woods) is solid wood flooring. You get the packs of factory prepared t&g that is about 500mm - 1m long.
If you can find a company that does flooring and ask them if you can get some of the offcuts from a job. There are always a lot of offcuts from where floor meets skirting board.
The only thing you will need to be wary of is graininess. As hardwoods are getting rarer, they are now processing woods from parts of the tree that are more grainy. I have some fantastically grainy teak, looks great as a floor but not so realistic on a model perhaps.
However, you will then need to prepare the wood yourself. A planer will be needed, and a fine (or modellers) circular/band/fret saw.
