The brutal world of Live steam racing !
« on: May 11, 2015, 08:27:01 pm »

Hi gents

Last week end "Vap'IDF" took place at our pond. There were agility courses, docking/undocking and of course a 500m race.

Here's footage from the race which took a somewhat dramatic turn:

I didn't know you steam rascals would pull things like that. Only us crazy offshore guys.  {-)

But well, everything turned out fine in the end.  :-))

Bonjour,

I would not have left my baby in the pond !

Hopefully, the gas was going on coming out and I could see its bubbles.

The depth was about 2,00 m with more than 30 cm of mud and my boat was on it.
I could not walk, so I hanged on the rescue boat and found my launch with my feet.

As soon as the boat was back on the table, friends disassembled all the electronic devices (receiver, servos) and cleaned them with alcohol. I will have to test them, but I think this quick action saved them.

I will not comment my competitor attitude and will be careful next time.

This race takes part of the Anton Trophy which is won after 3 wins, racing means for me I have to accept risks but I will never do anything wrong to win.

The slow race is quite safer !

The two boats are almot twins, thin 1,30 m hull, JMC compound 6,5 cm3 steam engine, but I va vite 2 has a Scott boiler which is more efficient than the classic horizontal one of "Liva V", so I can not maintain the 8 bars allowed pressure for the 6 minutes of the 500 m race.

And I did not loose my coffee spoon :-)

Brutal indeed, looks like a gorgeous pond to sail in though, and the lines of your boat are absolutely beautiful sir.

Bonjour TugCowboy,

In fact, this hull was originally designed for a class M sail boat ! A buyer did not finalize his order so the seller suggested me to build my fast steam boat with it.

I have just added a mahogany deck.

As "I va Vite 2" had the same shape, I knew it would not be too bad... for a classic shape.

I know now that the appropriate shape to go fast is the FSR one, a light flat hull which can fly... This will be another story...

<:( My heart sank(pun here) when I saw this video,it was like all my nightmares rolled into one as like many a boat modeler I have had a boat sink and had to go out and get it,wading across the lake not sure if you will be able to find it and when you do it breaks your heart to see the amount of damage the water has done, still after all this the next week we are back at the lake sailing our little boats with no thought of what happened before, that being I am very careful when sailing my steam launch which having a narrow hull does not handle choppy water very well only sailing on still waters and avoiding the centre of the lake which is always choppy, the nice thing about the incident was that the boat came out of the water with no damage which is lucky and we all need a bit of that at times,Ray. :-)) :-))

I wonder if the offending boat was skippered by a Mr Schumaker

French-speaking viewers can hear the "i va vite 2" skipper immediately trying to put the blame on Raphael even before the ship's bow had gone under.

To me while recording and upon reviewing the footage it is quite obvious that the "I va vite 2" is at fault.

These boats are extremely unforgiving akin to their high center of gravity. Actually the "i va vite 2" almost rolls over on her own when her skipper jerks the rudder.

Raphael:  will you be at "Bateaux en Fete" this week end ?

Pretty nice place. And we have a concrete berth built by the club members back in 1982.

The water isn't very clean though as it can sometime collect water coming from the nearby highway. The upside is that fishing and swimming are forbidden. You still have fishermen now and then but they usually go to the opposite bank and when they dare complain about our boat we can warn them about the poor quality of the water and remind them the ban on fishing.

Bonjour,

Dirty or not, when your "baby" is in danger, you do not hesitate to go in the water.

I have to confess that I already sank alone my tug Jan during a manifestation, having forgotten that a real 400 Kilos launch with 4 people inside has some inertia, as you cane see it in this great video of my friend Eric HERE, look from 3'20 ". I have changed all the servos and have not navigated again with it.

Hopefully, I had high boots at this moment...

Calimero, Yes, I will go to Massy on Saturday with Jan again to be pulled in the safety launch  :-))
