The greatest test pilot!
« on: May 15, 2015, 08:14:11 pm »

I have just finished saving up for perhaps the most expensive book I have ever bought by myself.
Available from the Aviation Bookshop (aviation-bookshop.com) there are 15 commissioned paintings by the renowned aviation artist Michael Turner of one mans close encounters of the terminal kind- the famous test pilot Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown CBE DSC AFC RN.
Absolutely stunning book, couldn't afford the leather bound copy but at least mines signed by Winkle and Michael Turner!

It was that picture I wanted to see he most as I had read his autobiography Wings On My Sleeve about his incident in the Saro SA/R1 amphibious jet fighter prototype  and the description of the crash was amazing how he escaped is a miracle. :o

It's criminal that Eric "Winkle" Brown has yet to be awarded a Knighthood.  Given his service and the fact he advanced aviation research in leaps and bounds, he deserves one.

Hi, I would go along with that.  Just watched a repeat of the docunentary about his life again.  He put a lot of his survivals down to being small!
Great guy deserves recognition.
regards to all,
Roy

Usual story, he thinks out loud not with the establishment. See him as a consultant on various TV programs. Brilliant man, the scapes and crashes he virtually walked away from, total nutter, fabulouse dedication to the world of test pilots.

Nominate him for one, Tailuk..............you and anyone can nominate any person for a gong, even a knighthood..........and if you look on line it gives you all the info you need to go through the steps.

RE: He put a lot of his survivals down to being small!..  not forgetting that he also mentions checking everything twice B4 take off
another reason for him still being around at 95 years young..

there is already a petition underway to get him elevated but being an unassuming Scotsman he`d probaly rather have a dram..
