Any 10 amp or aboive ESC, these motors stall about 5 amps.
As to the battery, as big as possible and sail all day.

Get a 6 volt lead acid battery. Amperage doesn't matter as long as the boat will take the weight.

The largest amperage battery that you can fit - the motors will only take the current that they need.

Hi Everyone,

I've returned to building Model Boats after a 20 year break!! and all these electronic speed controllers are new to me.  The last speed controller I fitted was a "Bobs Board". Anyone remember them??

Does anyone know what a stalled 6v Decaperm draws in terms of amps, as I can't decide which MTronics ESC will be suitable... 15, 20 or 25 amp model.

Thanks in anticipation

The 15 amp ESC will be OK.  Unlike bobs boards where the bord and motor needed to be properly matched, with a modern ESC what will handle a lot can handle a little.  Some very high current controllers have a poor low speed responce.  If a motor stalls at something like the controllers limit, there is usually a shutdown circuit to protect things.  Provided that there is nothing electrical broken anywhere, these do a great job of protecting things.
Just remember that no controller can force a motor to do more than it is designed to do as long as you kepp within the voltage limit of the motor.

It would be interesting to know if you have considered any other make of speed controller. There ARE other manufacturers out there.....or is it the glossy adverts that do it for you?

A 6 volt Deccaperm should run at about 2750 rpm on the geared outlet.
They will usually pull about 5 to 7 amps on normal running and stall just over 14 amps.
These motors are notoriously electrically "dirty" so ensure that it is fitted with suppressors.
I have just tested one now to be sure.
I would suggest a 20 amp ESC which will bring into play others at approx same price, eg ACTion, Electronize or MTronics.
I myself have just started using ACTion again, but only because the owner is an active member of this forum, yes FLJ.
But that choice is up to you.
What size and type prop are you using?

Many thanks everyone,

Bob, .....the prop is a 2" brass 4 blade, which I made myself when I bulit a 1: 24 scale TID Tug many years ago.

It may not be obvious but this is all for a 1: 24 scale model of a Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Survey Vessel called the AESTUS.
She was built in 1949 by W. Yarwood & Sons at Northwich in Cheshire, and I was fortunate to be able to abtaiin a copy of the plans from the MDHC. in about 1981.  I think she was scrapped in 1988 or there abouts.

Yes and I've still got a Bob's board in use to drive a bow thruster. No diodes, capacitors resistors etc. to fry and very little contribution to Action Man's pension/beer funds. What's not to Like?  :P
