help identifying this 1950's warship 4ft long
« on: June 03, 2015, 11:20:46 am »

hi
please could any one shed some light on this unique boat/warship?
I bought it to do up but looking at the electronics in side it would be a shame to modified with new electronics. I have dated it around the 1950's due to it having 22.5v batteries still in side and a mighty motor. it looks to be a valve operated boat. the boat it self is a little over 4ft and the electronics spread from front to back.
if any one knows what kit it was or what warship it was I would be very interesting to learn.
the gun on the top are attached to the mighty motor and using linkages it looks like they used to turn.
regards

Wow!  I don't know about operating guns but from the amount of "gubbins" in there it could have operating RADAR too!  Perhaps HMS Watson Watt would be an appropriate name.   Seriously though obviously a destroyer of some description.  Unless it's missing a funnel perhaps something like an "O" class.

almost certainly scratch built, as I can't remember any type of kit answering that description being around in those days.

those electronics remind me of the dirty atomic bomb as seen on Goldfinger, when 007 was cuffed against it in Fort Knox trying to disable it..............don't press the wrong button {-) {-) {-) {-) {-)

I have no idea what on earth that is but I LOVE IT.
Please fix it up and try to get it restored "as is" if at all possible.

Going to be watching this one very closely

thank you for all your replays I have looked at "o" class destroyers and it does look very similar to some of them I do have some of the bits to make the structure on top but there is not enough parts to make the all the structure I have had an idea to convert it to a digital receiver and transmitter as well as using the original electronics. I thought I could do this by using a 12v scooter or mobility battery and use a dc to dc step up transformer for the motors, id use a voltage regulator to power the receiver and use the signal voltage from the receiver to power some relays to drive the direction of the motors (may need to use a un2003a driver) and maybe use some miniature limit switches for the original servo. how ever I need to consider the weight id be adding. but at the moment I don't even know if the motors still work nor seen them as they are berried under all the electronics in the middle the props still turn witch means they have not seized up with age. it would be nice to get this unique boat running again just looking at it I can tell some one put a lot of effort in when building it.

I'd second that! If you see anything starting to count down.... turn it off!

Having looked in the Boy's Bumper Book of Destroyers it doesn't look as if it's an O class as they only had single 4.7s.   Battles had twin 4.7s but only forward.  The aft gun positions were 2 twin 40mms.  Not a Tribal as they had rounded sterns.  3 down, several dozen classes to go.

Wow, I bet she doesn't need much ballast,  it could be someone's build of a generic destroyer rather than a specific class, M,L, and N class had an aft twin turret but further forward and higher up, I've never seen one on the deck area usually dedicated to depth charges %%

Wow.  You've got some boat there.

Did it come with the handset ?    This could be such a rare find and turn out to be quite a museum piece.   Please take care with what you do to it.

I was going to say that it would have a unique aroma! Crikey, that is serious electrikery. Is it worth asking a company that maintains motors for advice on ways of cleaning/servicing motors in such an awkward position? Or if there is something you could spray on them to clean/lubricate them??

Whoever wired that up must either have been in the electronics industry, or was very knowledgable in the field as a hobby on its own, perhaps having electronics as the main hobby and may have made different things with electronics in, this ship being just one.
