Kit for Stewart D10 steam engine?
« on: May 26, 2015, 01:31:46 pm »

Good Afternoon Folks
Firstly I am a new member so please be gentle with me lol  %%
I have for many years been building small steam engines and also many years building model aircraft. I am about to start the construction on a Stewart D10 steam engine. As this is my first venture into model boating I am looking for advice on where the best place for me to start looking for a kit or plans on a steam launch of some sorts, any advice woudl be greatly appreciated.
Regards

alan, welcome.............I used to buy monthly a magazine called "Classic Boats"    the 1 : 1 scale variety, and there were a number of adverts in the classifieds offering plans for building full size launches and such, which can be easily scaled down.

You really need a sizeable boat to carry (and make the most of) a D10, its boiler and associated bits and bobs.  Most of the widely available kits are, I suspect, a bit on the small side.  There are many Mayhemers with vastly more experience than me, but I would have thought a 40" hull is about the smallest you should consider, and anything up to 60" (or even longer if you go for a slender Windermere style launch) will work fine with that engine.  There are a few glassfibre hulls around you might consider, but I do think you are in for a bit of scratch building rather than putting a kit together.  You might want to consider scaling a full size plan - try http://www.selway-fisher.com/Steam.htm for a start.  They do model plans as well as the 1:1 version.

Good luck - and let us know how you get on.

Bonjour Alan,

One of my D10 is in a small boat, a tug, the JAN and it is a real pleasure to navigate "really" with it as you can see HERE. The JAN is a  1,20 m, 47", +/- 21 kilos old ROBBE kit, already heavy to manage alone.

Imagine what means 50 kilos for my friend Hervé tug Muimota...  :((

I already can not manage my 1,35 m, 53", +/- 32 kilos tug Côte d'Emeraude...

Based on my experience, I would suggest a small boiler with a poweful torch and a coupled water pump to feed it and avoid heating too much water t one time. About propeller, we use 4 blades 4,5 " Propshop production, wich is wide for a launch but compatible with tug shape.
